The new Maths Curriculum(September 2015) Mr Raza Ali – Assistant Headteacher Mr Mark Greenwold – Head of Maths

Introduction – GCSE Maths is getting more demanding The VOLUME OF SUBJECT CONTENT has increased. The DEMAND OF THAT CONTENT is increasing too, with harder topics being introduced both at foundation tier and higher tier. The TOTAL TIME FOR THE EXAMINATIONS is increasing from 3.5 hours to 4.5 hours. MORE MARKS AT HIGHER GRADES at both foundation and higher tier. In the assessment’s there is a greater emphasis on PROBLEM SOLVING AND MATHEMATICAL REASONING (AO2 AND AO3). FEWER FORMULAE WILL BE PROVIDED IN EXAMINATIONS.

The key differences in CONTENT The biggest change in content is at Foundation tier. There are new topics added to foundation tier for 2015 which previously were assessed at higher tier only. More content in higher tier to stretch and challenge so that students are better prepared for A level mathematics. For detailed changes in content, please Mr Greenwold.

Foundation Tier – Content in proportions (%) Ratio and proportion is now a stand alone strand in maths

Higher Tier – Content in proportions (%) Ratio and Proportion is now a stand alone area Less emphasis on number Significant emphasis on Algebra in higher tier

The key differences in ASSESSMENT Foundation tier: Grades 1 – 5 Higher tier: Grades 4 – 9 3 separate exam papers: Paper 1 (non calculator), paper 2 and 3 (calculator) Each exam is 1.5 hours long and each has equal weighting A student must take all 3 papers in the same tier New C/D borderline will be grades 4-5 GCSENew GCSE A*+9 A*8 A7 B+6 B-5 C4 D3 E2 F1
