3 Objectives To understand Numeracy and how, as a school, we are improving standards; To understand what the Mathematics Scheme of Learning looks like for years 7 and 8. To understand the Mastery concept. To look at how you can help with Numeracy at Home.

4 What is Numeracy ? Numeracy is the ability to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts It is about having the confidence to use skills across the curriculum and to manage and respond to the mathematical demands of life. It is not just about passing a maths exam, it is about preparing pupils for their future endeavours. Numeracy skills are developed mainly in Maths but also in other subjects.

5 Starter In front of you are some Mathematics exam questions. Please discuss the questions; -Are they what you would expect?

6 New Mathematics Curriculum 3 exam papers – 1 non calc, 2 calculator (each 1.5 hours) Graded 1-9 More Ratio and Proportion Aims: -Fluency -Conceptual Understanding -Problem Solving

7 The problem Pupils will regularly say the words ‘I can’t do Maths’. A lot of the time this is because their parents say similar things. In Many countries around the world saying ‘I can’t do Maths’ is taken in the same way as ‘I can’t read’.

13 How did you feel about the task? How confident have you felt in supporting your child through homework tasks? How likely is it that you will support your child with homework tasks? How likely are you to present real life scenarios to your child? Remember – Try not to say ‘I can’t do Maths’.

15 What is the expected progress? The government outlines expected progress as follows… KS2 Level 5 KS4 Grade B/A/A* KS2 Level 4 KS4 Grade C/B KS2 Level 3 KS4 Grade D/C

16 GCSE’s and beyond All the skills learnt in KS3 are developed further in the GCSE course. These skills provided are aimed at providing your child with the confidence to not only use the skills in Maths lessons and across the curriculum, but also in the workplace. It is now up to everyone involved to provide your child with a support network that encourages development and progression within this crucial area of their education.
