Greening Health Care A program to help hospitals work together to improve energy and water use efficiency, lower emissions of solid waste and pollution, and be recognized for fiscal and environmental stewardship Workshops Benchmarking Funding & Resources lower energy & operating costs reduced environmental impact infrastructure renewal government & utility funding fiscal & environmental stewardship

Participating Hospitals (June, 2005) Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care Markham Stouffville Hospital North York General Providence Centre Rouge Valley HS Scarborough Hospital St. Joseph's Health Centre St. Michael's Hospital Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre Toronto Rehabilitation Institute University Health Network West Park Healthcare Centre York Central Hospital

Working Together Greening Health Care Website  utilities management system  performance benchmarking  best practices checklists  energy targeting and action planning  monitoring actual savings  on-line utility budgeting and analysis tools  networking

Benchmarking Benchmarking energy and water use and waste production identifies best practices, and highlights opportunities for savings  energy  water  waste  load factor  power factor  annual trends  seasonal patterns Overall Change +6,092,863 ekWh +4.2% Year 2 vs. Year 1

Peer Learning [ facilitated workshops [ sharing knowledge with peers [ engagement with technical experts [ action plan development [ review and analysis of savings [ problem-solving [ networking

Collaborative Projects Where common opportunities are identified, collaborative projects are developed:  participant-directed  evaluation of new technologies  auditing and implementing common measures  engaging product and service suppliers and funding agencies  shared resources  economies of scale  group purchasing

Keeping the Score Monitoring actual monthly savings, normalized for weather and pricing differences, highlights successes

Recognition Awards Program Reporting Newsletters Media Events [ demonstrating and celebrating fiscal and environmental leadership within each hospital, to governments, and to local communities Most energy efficient hospitals in 2004: West Park Healthcare Centre (chronic care) and Scarborough Grace Hospital (acute care)
