4 th Grade Parent Orientation Welcome, parents and students!

Welcome to 4 th Grade!  Thank you for coming tonight! We hope that you will learn valuable information regarding your child’s 4 th grade year.

Meet the Team TEAM TEACHERS:  Linda Sabrin  Steve Vitolano

4 th Grade Goals  To give your child the academic and social skills needed to progress to fifth grade and thrive in an ever changing society  Accept RESPONSIBILITY for one’s own actions  Become Life-Long Learners.

Classroom Community  Each classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Gifted & Talented Dolphins… “Catch the W.A.V.E.” …with the Fin-tastic Five  We are respectful.  We are orderly.  We are on task.  We are safe.  We take care of property.

Grade Level Subjects  The subjects we cover during fourth grade are:  Reading and Writing  Math  Science/Health  Social studies  Related Arts

Reading  All curriculum instruction is guided by the Readers Workshop approach.  In 4 th grade, many novel sets are used to teach the standards.  Students must read however, for 30 minutes each night to increase fluency.

Writing  All curriculum instruction is guided by the Writers Workshop using the Writing Process.  During the school year, your child will be creating various types of writing including: Narrative, Descriptive, Expository, Persuasive, Letter Writing, Poetry, Journaling, and Creative Stories

Social Studies  Units of Study include: Native Americans, Explorers, Colonial Times, Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Immigration  Historical Novels are also used to teach the Common Core Learning Standards.

Math  All curriculum instruction is guided by the Go Math Program.  Remember to be on the lookout throughout the school year for the unit Family Letters. Also, check out our websites.

Useful Math Websites  

Science  Units of study include: Scientific Inquiry, Organisms and their Environments, Astronomy, Weather, and Properties of Electricity and Magnetism  The Science Fair will be held in late May. There will be a Science Fair packet and information will be covered in class.  There is a 4 th -grade state science exam in May and June. (More info to follow).

Vocabulary  The vocabulary program that we use in 4 th grade concentrates on whole-class novels, math terms, and content areas.  Students are expected to use these words in their speaking, writing, and demonstrate an understanding of words in context.  Quizzes will be given as they pertain to reading material in various subject areas.

Homework  Students will have homework Monday through Friday. Math homework along with reading for 30 minutes is every night.  You can check for assignments on

Checklist for Success  Ask if nightly homework is completed  Sign homework notebook  Quiz Vocabulary and Math Facts Nightly  Visit our Web-Sites  See all returned materials in the take- home folder.  Read all classroom and school newsletters.  Discuss your child’s reading nightly..
