National History Day 2014 Rights and Responsibilities in History

NHD Theme  (Ideas, people, events that impacted history)

 Must revolve around a person, idea, or event/effort that changed history (topic and interpretation is up to you)  It must take place ‘in history’ meaning stay away from events in the last 20 years  It must have an Impact/Change on history (this means that something happened and it could be as vague as the introduction of a new idea), and…. The Historical Importance

The Historical Importance  You must address questions about time and place, cause and effect, change over time, and impact and significance.  Your finished product must explain the successes, failures, and consequences created because of the effort and what the lasting change on history is (was).  Draw conclusions about how the topic affected individuals, communities, other nations and the world as a whole

What is a Primary Source?  A first hand account of an event Examples  Letters  Diaries  Speeches  Photographs  Interviews  Videos

What is a Secondary Source?  A secondhand account about people or events Examples  Biographies (not autobiographies)  Newspaper articles after the event  Encyclopedias  Any info already gathered and organized for you

What are the Categories?  Individual or Group categories  Junior Division (6,7,8) -Documentary (photostory, MovieMaker, PowerPoint, digital movie) -Exhibit (exhibit board) -Performance (play or skit) -Historical Paper (Individual only) -Website (must use nhd.weebly.com)

Rules  No more than 3 per group  Must do work outside of class (some class time will be used for NHD)  Must share work equally  You will complete evaluations for your project and you and your group’s efforts to complete the project

Exhibits  40” wide x 30” deep x 6’ high  Media devices may be used, no more than 3 min. and 500 word limit  500 word/text limit  A, the, of count as 1 word

Performances  10 minute time limit  5 min. setup & 5 min. tear down  Can use media  Costumes may be used

Documentaries  10 min. max  5 min. setup & 5 min. tear down  No live narration and you must operate all equipment  Give credits for pics & other sources at end of Doc.  Must be done by you

Websites  1,200 visible, student-composed word limit  100MB space limit  Must have a “home page” with file name “index”  Multimedia clips no more than 45 sec.  Must use to get started

Paper  Individual only  Must have an Introduction with thesis, body addressing the theme, and a conclusion (see NHD National website)  1,500-2,500 words (6-10 pages)  Must use footnotes or end notes  Ms. Stillman and I will be glad to help you  ***only strong writers should choose this category
