1 2017 Broward County History Fair

2 What is the Fair? Program that allows students to conduct research on a world, national, state, or local topic. This year’s theme: Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History” “It is not just a day, it is an experience.”

3 Topics Students can choose any topic they wish, so long as it relates to the theme. Try not to choose a topic from the last 25 years.

4 Categories- Individual

5 Groups can range from 2-5 students

6 Annotated Bibliography
Required for ALL Categories Will contain all sources that provided usable information for your project. Must explain what the source provided and how it was used in the entry. MLA or Turabian style bibliography required.

7 Process Paper Required for ALL projects except historical paper.
Maximum of 500.

8 Process Paper Process paper will explain: how the topic was chosen
how research was conducted how the entry type was selected and created how the entry reflects/relates to the theme

9 **Historical Paper** *Individual Project*

10 Historical Paper Traditional form of presenting research.
Various types of creative writing are permitted: Fictional diaries Poems Must conform to all rules

11 Length Between 1,500 words and 2,500 words.
All words and numbers count Annotated bibliography, graphics’ captions, and appendices are not included in word count Put the total number of words in the paper on the title page.

12 IF THERE ARE NO CITATIONS, THE PAPER IS PLAGIARIZED!
Citations- footnotes, endnotes, or internal documentation are REQUIRED. Please cite based on MLA or Turabian guidelines. IF THERE ARE NO CITATIONS, THE PAPER IS PLAGIARIZED!

13 Requirements Typed on 8.5 x 11 white paper 1 inch margins on all sides
Number pages consecutively Double-spaced with writing on one side of the paper Provide word count on the title page Staple pages in top left corner- No Covers or Binders No illustrations or graphics on title page

14 **Exhibit** *Individual OR Group*

15 Exhibit A visual and verbal representation of research and interpretation of a topic’s impact on history Like a museum exhibit Provide captions for visuals

16 Size Requirements May be no larger than :
40 in wide x 30 in deep x 6 feet high Circular or rotating exhibits must be no more than 30 inches in diameter Tables on which a project is placed do not count in overall height

18 Credits of visual sources
Students will include a brief credit, on the exhibit itself, for all visual sources (e.g., photographs, paintings, charts, graphs, etc.). These do NOT count toward the student- composed word count. They also must fully cite these sources in their annotated bibliography.

19 Media Media used in an exhibit can not run for longer than 3 minutes.
Viewers and judges must be able to control media devices. Devices must fit in the size limits of the exhibit. Electricity cannot be guaranteed.

21 **Performance** *Individual or Group*

22 Performance A performance is a dramatic portrayal of research and a topic’s significance in history and must be original in production.

23 Time Must not exceed 10 minutes in length
Timing starts immediately after the announcement of the title. Student(s) allowed an additional 5 minutes to set up and 5 minutes to clean up.

24 Media Devices Media is permitted: Slides Tape Recorders Computers
Students must run all equipment Remember it is about the history not just the drama

25 Costumes Costumes may be purchased or created.

27 **Documentary** *Individual or Group*

28 Documentary A documentary reflects the student’s ability to use audiovisual equipment and communicate a topic’s significance. Presentations should use primary materials as well as original elements.

29 Parents CAN NOT help the student with technical issues!
Time May not exceed 10 minutes in length. Students will have 5 minutes to set up and 5 minutes to clean up. Time will start when first audio is heard or visual is seen. Parents CAN NOT help the student with technical issues!

30 Involvement/Production
Student must run all equipment. All entries must be student-produced Narration Voice-Overs Dramatization * This does not include interviews of participants in a historical event Follow all copyright rules!

31 Computer Entries Must provide the judges with a DVD of the project for further review. Put the name of the entry on the DVD. If possible, save as a Quick Time movie. Failure to leave a working DVD with the judges will make the documentary ineligible for the runoff round. The DVD will not be returned.

32 Word count Put the number of words in the process paper on the title page.

33 **Web Site** *Individual or Group*

34 Requirements No more than 1200 visible student- composed words.
The entire site, including all multimedia, may use up to 100MB of file space.

35 Word count Put the number of student- composed words on the website and in the process paper on the home page.

36 Navigation One page must serve as a “homepage”
Include names of participants, entry title, division, main menu, website word count and process paper word count All pages must be interconnected with hypertext links. Auto redirects are not permitted.

37 Multimedia Up to four minutes total media permitted
No student narration If a plug in is needed, provide a link to the site where it is available for free.

Use your student ID as your username and password. Begin constructing your site! Each time you save, it will allow you to go back and edit.

40 Copyright rules must be followed!
