Presentation transcript:

NORTH KOREAN ENERGY New Technologies and Construction June 2006: PRC Foreign ministry announces China and DPRK will make concrete arrangements for jointly exploiting oil sources in their neighboring waters. May 2006: Joint PRC-DPRK 42 MW thermal power plant begun on Yalu River near Ji’an/Manpo. March 2006: Academy Electrical Institute highlights new wind generators. May 2006: North Korea has been increasing the use of solar heat to in factories, greenhouses and fish farms in South Hwanghae. April 2006: DPRK Vice Minister Kim Gye Gwan in Tokyo states that Pyongyang will shift its basic energy policy from coal and hydroelectric power generation to nuclear energy. June 2005: DPRK announces work on building 290 medium- and small-size hydropower plants in Chagang Province. Many similar projects in other provinces which looks like this:

NEW DAM CONSTRUCTION: FIRST PHASE

CONSTRUCTION AT YONGWON DAM (ABOVE) & PYONGYANG THERMAL PLANT (BELOW)

Paegma-Cholsan Waterway

May 2005 CPIT interview: “Our most important success has been the land rezoning program. We have included and rezoned the entire agricultural system, in the whole country. We are constructing new irrigation systems and. ground leveling. We have now completed the Kaechon-Taesong and Paekma- Cholsan waterways. These are natural-flow waterways, with no electrical support needed.”
