A Totalitarian State Pages 733 to 738

Stalin in Power Name means “ steel” Stalin becomes dictator after fighting for power with Trotsky Used propaganda and fear to control the public Trotsky is assassinated in Mexico (1940) Creation of planned economy

Planned Economy Goal: Make-up 100 year gap in technology in 10 yrs. Government control (What, How, and for Whom) Wanted to advance technology so capitalist countries did not defeat them.

Industrial Development and Agriculture Turned peasant farms into collective farms to increase food supply Peasants resisted, destroyed livestock Famine occurred Stalin responds with violence. Kulaks- Prosperous peasants were sent to brutal labor camps where 5 to 10 million were killed.

Industry Focus on heavy industry instead of consumer goods. Production increased but employees literally “ worked to death” Punishment for workers who did not meet quota. Labor camps for protesters

Role of Communist Party Operated at every level of society Head of party- central committee- politburo- most powerful person made all decision in Soviet Union.

Totalitarian Rule Under Stalin Had complete control of people Pro-communism broadcasts Massive propaganda campaign Use of terror to enforce ideas “Great Purge” –get rid of all of Stalin’s rivals  Literally erased people from history

Non-Aggression Pact Despite their aggression, Stalin and Hitler sign a non-aggression act ( 1939) Both countries invade Poland in 1939 June Hitler breaks agreement— invades Soviet Union *Read Life under Siege Pages 735 to 736

Communist Government 1936 Stalin wrote new constitution— created elected legislature called Supreme Soviet HOWEVER—only allowed 1 political party so voter had no choice In theory: Supreme Soviet made laws In fact: Communist party ran Supreme Soviet

Allied Forces Win WWII USSR gains control of all countries west of Moscow to Berlin. More than 20 million Russians died during WWII (mostly all infrastructure was destroyed) Set-up: Satellite states (puppet states) Cold War (Proxy War between the United States and USSR)

Khrushchev Rebukes Stalin in public (1956) Did not change the way the country or economy was run Encouraged arms race with the U.S. Production of consumer goods increases

Brezhnev Brutally repressive (not quite like Stalin) Cracked down hard on dissidents…ppl were jailed, exiled, or sent to hospitals for the mentally ill.
