Grant APRIL 27, 1822 – JULY 23, 1885 ★ Significance - Wanted control of the Mississippi Valley - Feb. 1862, took Fort Donelson - Broke confederate hold in Chattanooga Tennessee - Defeated general Lee at Petersburg ★ What makes him unique -General Ulysses S. Grant's victories in the Civil War made him a national hero. -was the Republican Party's candidate for President in ★ His Impact on the war -lead the North to victory over the Confederacy -Had many victories in the beginning - Lead Lincoln’s forces against the South.

Robert E. Lee ★ Significance - Was commander in chief of Virginia military force - responsible for educating many of the men who would later serve under him - chosen to take over the vacant position, and became commander of the Confederate armies. ★ What makes him unique? - He was married to the great granddaughter of Martha Washington. ★ Impact on the civil war - Lee's brilliant strategies prolonged the war 2 years.
