Adverbs

What is an adverb? An adverb is a part of speech used to modify or describe verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Many adverbs end in –ly ex. Quickly, swiftly, slowly, rapidly

Adverbs modifying verbs When an adverb modifies a verb, it can be next to the verb OR at the beginning or end of the sentence. Ex. The students walked quietly to the door. The students walked to the door quietly.

Adverbs modifying adjectives and adverbs When an adverb modifies an adjective or another adverb, it usually appears right before the word. Ex. It is a very important document. adjective

Comparative Adverbs Comparative adverbs compare two things. Formed by adding –er to one syllable adv. Or adding ‘more’ to longer adverbs. Ex. JP worked faster than Farris. Mrs. Busby has been teaching longer than Miss Lowery.

Adjectives v. Adverbs Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns. Adverbs describe verbs, adverbs and adjective. Ex. The yellow dog ran swiftly through the gate. adjectiveadverb

Avoiding Double Negatives The adverb not is a negative word. Other negative words: never, nobody, none, no one, nothing, nowhere Do not use two negative words together! You only need one negative word to express a negative idea. Ex: I could not find my homework nowhere. I could not find my homework anywhere.
