Lab Safety

Follow all directions.

Don’t be like a mad scientist. Always wear your safety goggles properly.

Appropriate clothing must be worn.

Lab aprons must be worn.

Secure long hair back away from face.

Know the hazards before you start an experiment.

Gather all equipment before starting a lab.

Clean up after yourself. Keep your lab station and equipment clean, neat, and organized.

Never walk away from a lit Bunsen burner.

Never return unused reagents to stock bottles.

Waste Beaker

Throw away trash in the trash can, not the sink.

Flush liquids with copious amounts of water.

Broken Glass

No eating or drinking in the lab.

Never aim a test tube at yourself or others.

Be cautious when testing odors.

Report accidents immediately.

Do not mix chemicals unless told to do so.

Keep aisles open.

Wash hands with soap and water when done with a lab.

Know where the emergency equipment is located.

Make good observations & measurements. Do yours make sense?

Lab Work Expectations  Safety first! Follow all safety rules.  Read and follow all directions.  Be responsible with the lab equipment.  Work quickly and efficiently during lab times.  Think about what you are doing and why. What understanding can you gain from the lab? What does it help explain?

Lab Work Expectations  Make good and thorough observations.  Check your measurements to make sure they are accurate and precise. Do they make sense?  Check your calculations for accuracy. Do they make sense?  Put away materials and clean up your area when finished.  If you are unsure of anything, please ask.

Bottom Line  Use common sense and follow directions.
