1 Safety in the Science Lab
Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible! Safety in the Science Lab Rules and Symbols 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

2 Safety First Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible!
Scientists know that when working in the laboratory, it is very important to follow safety procedures. The most important safety rule is to always follow your teacher’s directions or the directions in your textbook exactly. Make sure you have read each rule and direction carefully, making sure you understand each rule. If you do not understand a rule, ask your teacher to explain it. Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible! 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

3 Rules and Symbols Glassware Safety Eye and Face Safety Fire Safety
Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are working with glassware. Eye and Face Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are performing an experiment in which you must take precautions to protect your eyes and face by wearing safety goggles. Fire Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are working with fire. Never use any source of fire without wearing safety goggles. Sharp Instrument Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are working with a sharp instrument. 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

4 Rules and Symbols Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible!
Heat Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you should put on heat resistant gloves to avoid burning your hands. Electrical Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are working with electricity in the lab. Chemical Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are working with chemicals that could be hazardous. Animal Safety Whenever you see this symbol, you will know that you are working with live animals. 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

11 What’s Wrong With These Statements?
Peter says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom Stephanie says that the lab aprons are unattractive and that the safety goggles mess up her hair. She refuses to wear them. 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

12 What Are the Missing Safety Devices?
Fire blanket Fire extinguisher Safety hood or vent ________ Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible! 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

13 The fire extinguisher is located on the back sink.
Only the science facilitator is authorized to use the fire extinguisher. A. Combustible: wood, clothes, paper, plastic, and rubber. B. Flammable liquids: oil, grease and paint thinner. C. Energized electrical equipment. 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

14 P-A-S-S. The average fire extinguisher only operates about 10 seconds. Don't waste it! You must get close to the fire - as close as 5 or 6 feet! To effectively operate an extinguisher, think P-A-S-S. P -- pull the pin A -- aim the hose at the base of the fire S -- squeeze the handle S -- sweep the hose back and forth 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5

15 NO HORSEPLAYING IS ALLOWED.
Safety Contract Always read and make sure you understand the activity or investigation you are going to do. Whenever you see the word caution, follow the directions carefully. Learn where safety equipment is located in your classroom . Make sure you understand how and when it is to be used. Do not work in the lab when you are unsupervised. Do not perform investigations without your teacher’s permission. Never mix, touch, taste, heat or breathe chemicals unless you are told to do so by your teacher. Always wear safety goggles and an apron when working with chemicals. Do not use cracked or broken glassware. Report this to your teacher. Keep all work surfaces and equipment clean. Do not eat or drink in the classroom, unless told otherwise by your teacher. When you finish your work in the lab make sure that your work surface is clean. Return all materials to their proper places. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after working in the lab. Report all accidents to your teacher. 1/2/2019 Lab Safety: Chapter 1-5
