LNTB WORKSHOP For Teachers and Childcare Educators working with Young Children

Young Children Are smarter than you might think Learn through repetition and purposeful play Learn “naturally” from visual and tactile experience – show me and let me try Definitely learn from the behaviour of adults Can learn from instruction/direction Are at different stages of development – cognitively, physically, socially Come to pre-school or school programs from home and childcare experiences that can be very different

Pre-School Children Preschool – up to age 3 Not all pre-school age children participate in pre-school programs – some are at home or are with care givers Adults providing licensed pre-school programs are qualified early childhood educators Programs are offered in a childcare setting which can be within a school or can be in a community setting In Ontario childcare is regulated by the Ministry of Education – for five years now

Kindergarten Children Kindergarten – age 4 and 5 (some start at age 3) Adults providing the program are an Ontario certified teacher and a qualified early childhood educator Students are in the kindergarten program during the school day – there is a provincial curriculum Students may also be at the school site for before or after school childcare

Grade One Students Grade 1 – age 6 (some start at age 5) Adults delivering the program is an Ontario certified classroom teacher Depending on student needs, there may be an educational assistant in the classroom Students are in the grade one program during the school day - there is a provincial curriculum Students may also be at the school site for before or after school childcare

Organizing a Workshop Work with the principal or other key adult regarding venue, invitations to workshop Offer workshop to all adults working with young children within a site or group of sites – preschool, kindergarten and grade one together, perhaps parents Will most likely be offering workshop outside of official school day so teachers/ECEs volunteering their time 60 minutes maximum, with lots of group interaction – sit in groups around tables Have take-aways – copies of materials, website info Include healthy snacks!

Set- Up Have round tables of six people set up in advance – on each table have two copies of each of the resources – pre-school, kindergarten, grade one plus the resources stick; also have a tent card with related website addresses and information about school based promotions and prizes Welcome people as they arrive – thank them, offer snacks, invite them to peruse materials/websites Start the session by drawing attention to the list of topics addressed in the resources for young children

Topics Pre-School Lessons Kindergarten Lessons Grade One Lessons Firefighters are Community Helpers 1 6 Smoke Alarms are Important Home Fire Drill –get outside and stay outside Stay Away from Hot Things Matches and Lighters - Grownups Fire Drills at School 3 5 Report an Emergency 3 Stop Drop and Roll 6

Activities First Activity– 15 minutes - At each table have an “assigned” topic from the LNTB resource –. have the table group look through the three booklets and suggested resources for that topic to arrive at three key things they want to share with the room and to generate on sticky notes any questions they have Second Activity – 15 minutes Have each table share three key things about the resources for their assigned topic with the room Third Activity – Discuss questions that have been generated

Conclusion Tell the “empty desk” story – shared purpose is to keep children safe – children need to learn safety behaviours and need the adults in their lives to model these behaviours Provide contact information and be clear about the nature of any direct support to the school/centre that your department could offer Draw attention to the community fire safety events and promotions Thank everyone again!
