Presentation transcript:

The Bikers Convention By David Wilson Maintenance Officer

Introduction and Aims of the Breakout Session 2 or 3 bright ideas which would improve the use of the bikes both to get to the University and for cycling around campus

Academic Support Other Residential Post-experience Multi-Storey CP KEY Existing Land Use

Centres of Activity

The University “More development will generate additional travel demand, and the University is committed to a balanced strategy of car parking management, green travel initiatives and improving key junctions in order to mitigate traffic congestion issues”

Academic Support Other Residential KEY Outline Proposed Land Use

Movement Plan

Sustainable Travel Policy  Encouraging walking and cycling  Encouraging the use of public transport  Managing car use and parking to encourage more sustainable travel choices  Supporting the TravelWise scheme  Regularly monitoring transport modes  Employing a Travel Co-ordinator to oversee implementation

Pedestrians & Cyclists  Strong on-site footway/cycleway network with connections to external routes  Creation of a mixture of dedicated footways/cycleways using internal roads  Bike parking and changing/shower facilities integrated into new buildings as a matter of course  Student residences will be built within walking or cycling distance of campus where possible  A cycle repair and maintenance centre will be set up

Summary  The University has a significant impact  We are endeavouring to manage that impact  Expansion of facilities for both teaching and research, and the associated support services such as catering and student accommodation  The development areas proposed are all contained within the land first approved for development in 1964  New developments would be designed and constructed according to the highest standards – BREEAM ‘Excellent’

Many thanks
