Integrating Biotechnology in the Core I. Defining Biotechnology

How can we integrate the theme of Biotechnology or Medical Science into our curriculum?

What is Biotechnology? What ideas, concepts, or words come to mind when you hear of biotechnology? Discuss with a partner and create a list Be prepared to share Think, Pair, and Share

What do you think? Should everyone who is arrested be required to give a DNA sample? Is it OK to eat food that has had its DNA altered by scientists? Is it OK to alter the DNA of animals to make them produce products for us that they would not normally make?

What do you think? How do you feel about the use of animals to research new cures and develop new drugs? Should we sacrifice an embryo to do research on its cells? Should we clone humans? Should we be able to “design” our children to have the traits we want them to have?

What do you think? Which diseases should we spend government money on to help find cures? Should we be forced to have vaccines by our employers? Is it OK to create alternative forms of fuel if it cost us an increase in food or harms the environment?

Their World This generation will have to decide what is a good idea and what is not regarding biotechnology and science technology. Jobs in science and medicine are projected to grown beyond the average during the next 10 years. Their ability to understand and thrive in this environment ultimately affects the quality of their lives.

What is Biotechnology? Traditional biotechnology uses the processes of organisms, such as selective breeding and the making of beer, wine, bread, fabrics, and enzymes The study of the cell, its processes and products which can be used to improve the human condition.
