3 8.L.2 Understand how biotechnology is used to affect living organisms. 8.L.2.1 Summarize aspects of biotechnology including: • Specific genetic information available • Careers • Economic benefits to North Carolina • Ethical issues • Implications for agriculture

4 TLW describe different aspects of biotechnology using Blendspace and Station activities, periodically analyzing the ethical implications of the technology in various applications, then complete a TOTD.

What is Biotechnology? Think (use stems: Bio = ? Technology = ?) Discuss with partner

6 What is Biotechnology? “[A]ny technology based on a biological system or organism.” Examples of biological systems or organisms? Uses organisms to solve real world human problems and make useful products. Can you think of recent items in the news that may represent biotechnology? Bioengineers apply engineering principles (science & math to solve a problem) to living systems to create products & processes. What fields of science would be used by a bioengineer?

7 Biotechnology is used in..
Medicine Microbiology Agriculture - Livestock and Food Production

8 Biotechnology In Medicine
Biotechnology has played a significant role in modern medicine. Many medical advancements involve the identification, use and manipulation of genes. Genetic Testing -- using a DNA gene sequence to identify crime scene DNA, paternity, genetic disease screening Gene Therapy – using viruses or bacteria to replace genes Cloning – Creating genetically identical organisms Tissue Culturing – grow human tissues & organs Drug Development – using biological processes in organisms to drugs or vaccines

9 Biotechnology In Microbiology
Microbes are ubiquitous (!) Scientists can use microbes to solve a variety of human and environmental problems. Cleaning oil spills Decomposing waste in landfills or water treatment plants Specialty food products (yogurt, cheese, bread, alcohol, soy) Home and industrial cleaners

10 Biotechnology In Agriculture
The oldest applications of biotech are found in agriculture. Early man used selective breeding (artificial selection) in both plants and animals to produce organisms with desired, useful traits. Modern agriculture is concerned with providing enough food for a growing world population. It uses genetic modification to: Increase crop yields (more food on less land) Improve the quality and nutritional value of food Improve the ability of crops to resist stresses such as weather, insects and disease.

11 Stations You will rotate through 8 different stations. You will have 5 minutes at each station. Do not waste time or talk unnecessarily. When you are finished with the stations, tape the station sheet in your notebook and finish the Blendspace activity.
