Review of Course Approach and Assignment on Class Discussions These slides from session 1 of the class and can be found on the class website

Active Learning Active learning is a “model of instruction that focuses the responsibility of learning on learners” 1 Studies indicate that students learn better if, instead of just listening to a lecture, they read, write, discuss, solve problems, and are engaged in such higher-order thinking tasks as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation In order for the professor to stop lecturing and enable discussions, the students must review the materials prior to class This is also known as a flipped class, where the teacher is a resource and change agent, facilitating seeking and growth, as the students form self-sufficient learning communities This approach also requires you to understand the type of learner you are – what helps you learn, what hinders your learning BA 553: Business Process Management2 “Active Learning” Available at: Accessed 12 January

Participating in an Active Learning Course Read the syllabus and course guidelines carefully, listen to the faculty presentation on the first day of class, and ask questions to be sure you understand the course format You are expected to participate at some meaningful level in class discussions Each student will also lead at least one class discussion. The professor will provide guidance for students on how to lead discussions If you are uneasy about this requirement and tempted to drop, please stick around for two or three discussions. You will probably find them less frightening than you anticipate BA 553: Business Process Management3

Learning Styles An understanding of learning styles can help learners identify activities that will most effectively increase their learning An individual’s learning style is the approach that works best to increase his or her learning and comprehension This starts with the individual learner identifying his or her learning style The “Index of Learning Styles” is one tool for assessing learning style BA 553: Business Process Management4

Learning and Continuous Improvement Continuous improvement involves collecting information on what’s working and what isn’t, and making changes My goal is to continually improve this course You can help me with that: Please track the hours you spend on my class for the next week, starting immediately after class is finished Bring a sheet of paper with the number of hours to the next class You don’t need to put your name on the paper The information you provide will have absolutely NO impact on your grade in this course The information will only be used to help me modify the assignments, if needed BA 553: Business Process Management5

Principles: My Expectations of You You will: Be respectful of others in the class (students and instructor) Come to class on time and prepared (assignments and readings) Listen a lot and talk a lot Tell me when you have an idea to improve the class Ask for help with teams (before the last two weeks of class) Identify areas where you need to improve your competencies to become a better manager Have fun learning! BA 553: Business Process Management6

Principles: My Commitments to You I will: Be respectful of you Come to class on time and prepared Give you lots of chances to talk and ask questions Ask you (as the customer) for ideas to improve the class Support your teams with any interpersonal conflict issues Help you identify ways to improve your competencies so you will be better managers Have fun teaching and learning! BA 553: Business Process Management7

Use of Technology in the Course How many students have laptops? How many students have smart phones with and internet access? Assignments will be collected electronically There will be quizzes in the class, which will also be provided electronically I hope to set up a class blog to enable good discussions of course topics between class sessions BA 553: Business Process Management8

Course Etiquette Use of Laptops and Phones During Class Phones should be on quiet mode during class Laptops should not be used in class during lectures s Between Students and Professor s should start with “BA 553” then a subject of some kind I will try to reply to your s within a day Class Blog We will use a class blog to share ideas and thoughts on the course work Be considerate in the content of s and blog entries BA 553: Business Process Management9

Class Discussions As mentioned previously, each student is expected to lead at least one class discussion, with help from one supporting student Student-led discussions will start in session 3 The assignments will be made randomly, so students need to prepare thoroughly for each class session: 1.Read and study the assignment made at the end of the previous class. 2.Formulate and write down four or five discussion questions based upon the assigned reading. 3.On the assumption that you will lead the day's discussion, write a brief (less than 5-minute) opening statement about the assignment. Your statement should set the stage for, and end by listing, one or more of your discussion questions. BA 553: Business Process Management10
