GROUP LEARNING TEACHING and ASSESSMENT

Give me a fish I eat for a DayTeach me to fishI eat for a life time

PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING AND TEACHING 1. The learning environment is supportive and productive 2. The learning environment promotes independence, interdependence and self motivation 3. Students’ needs, backgrounds, perspectives and interests are reflective in the learning program

5. Assessment practices are an integral part of teaching and learning. 6. Learning connects strongly with communities and practice beyond the classroom. 4. Students are challenged and supported to develop deep levels of thinking and application

Emotional Learning Mind under the control of environment Learning with awareness Mind under your control Intellectual Learning Mind controls you

Interactive Learning [group] Both Mind and Body engage in learning

Interactivity as a pedagogical technique requires a fundamental change in the way education is delivered. Tapscott has identified 7 ways this change occurs: From linear to hypermedia learning From instruction to construction and discovery From teacher-centered to learner-centered education From absorbing material to learning how to navigate and how to learn From schooling to lifelong learning From learning as torture to learning as fun From the teacher as transmitter to the teacher of facilitator

I remember... 5% of what I hear 10% of what I read 20% of what I hear and read 30% of what I am shown 50% of what I discuss 75% of what I do 90% of what I teach others

An even more interactive teaching technique is to divide the class into cooperative learning groups Each group should have four or five members There are many ways to facilitate group activities but it is important to give clear directions about what the group is supposed to do. It is also important to provide a tool that will make it likely for each member to participate.

ModeStrength GroupingMinimum 4 Grading based on point/steps Ensure all groups responds Maximum 10 Everyone should have a point to tell Everyone experience by sharing

Creamy layer Group member Creamy layer Group member Creamy layer Group member Creamy layer Group member

Creamy layer Group member Creamy layer Group member First stage-0.1 marks should be given to leader/creamy layer in the group

Group member Second stage - marks should be given individually to effective interaction [1 mark each]

Third stage - marks should be given for individual presentation [1mark each]. Group member Fourth stage - marks should be given for group presentation. [that is the total of all individual presentation]

Total 4x5=20 marks If all the members are well in all the four steps the group marks is -20 out of 20 That is the mark of one group is calculated as follows 1-Interaction – 1 each [individual] 2-presentation [ 1 each individual] 3-Correct answer [1 mark each individual] 4-Writting in the note book [1 mark each individual]

If one student is not performing well in a group [of 5] during interaction/ presentation/ correct answer/ writing the notes in his book and only 0.5 marks has been given, then the group mark for that step is 4+0.5= 4.5 But individual marks for member A who has performed well in all is 1+1+1+1+4.5= 8.5 That of less performer is 1+0.5+1+1+4.5= 8. If his/her performance is not well in two step then the mark is 1+0.5+0.5+1+4.5= 7.5 son on

The total marks for the a group in all the 4 steps with one defaulter is interaction – 1+1+1+1=0.5=4.5 Presentation- 1+1+1+1+1= 5 correct answer 1+1+1+1+1= 5 wrote the notes 1+1+1+1+1 = 5 Total 4.5+5+5+5= 19.5 [group mark] Individual marks If student A in group one has performed well in all the four steps he/she got 4 marks. But her total marks when adding group mark is 4+19.5= 23.5 out of 24 [23.5/24x10= 9.7] But in case of the defaulter – 3.5+19.5= 23 [23/24x10=9.5] The creamy layer students will get +0.1 i.e. If group A score 9.5 the cream in the group gets 9.6

Teacher should have a clear lesson plan which have following steps 1.Lesson objective- describe the lesson objective clearly. Why should the student learn this lesson. It is the outcome/ output that should be developed in the students, which is measureable 2.Key concepts, find the key concept/ words that are most essential to understand the lesson objectives. It may be a word/ group of words which express an idea about the lesson.

4. Formative assessment tools- the method of assessing the above activities with well defined standard indicators. Observation of students’ listening skill, interpretation in concept, discussion in group, writing the answer, presentation in class, etc. 3. Instructional Practices Inventory- the method that may be used to deliver the idea about the concept. It may be lecturing/ demonstration, students centered activity, group learning, seminar, table talk etc. Based on the objective the teacher should find a suitable methods for instruction

5.Time schedule- The teacher should decide whether it is individual/ group activity, then fix the duration of each IPI like 10 minute for lecturing/ 10 minute for demonstration/ 10 minute for group discussion/ seminar/ table talk/ reference etc/ 5 minute for writing/ 1 minute for presentation/ individual / group etc. 6. Prepare the indicators according to the FA tools. It must be assessable to the students before starting the assessment.

7. If there is any written assignment for FA /SA that can be given and valuation should be taken place by exchanging the papers among the students. Then the teachers should display / write the correct answer on the board for students to value/correct the answer. 8. Feed back – the teacher should sum up the important point especially the key concept and objective of the lesson before finishing the class. Declare the result/ grade 9. Prepare the Summative Assessment questions for home work and conduct a unit test at the end of the lesson or unit.

Topic ObjectKey Concepts Instructional Practice Inventory FADurationSA To know about How new generation origin Class X Reproduction Organs Gender Fertilization Gametes zygote Student engaged Teacher engaged Teacher- student Lecturing Demonstration GD Debate Seminar Symposium Group presentation Assessment tool with Indicators Time for introduction Small explanation Group interaction Individual presentation Assessment Feed back Select two or three question for SA Conduct unit test after the lesson/ unit

Grouping The group in the class can be made in various ways- 1.Creamy layer Finding creamy layer. It is by asking to the students how many of them are able to do the work without any external help. Then the class should be divided in to the number of groups based on the number of cream students in the class. If there are 5 students who are ready to do the work independently the whole class should be divided into 5 and give the assignment helping each other then the teacher should monitor and help those groups which need teacher’s help.

The groups should be assigned to take over different points in the lesson and discuss each other with the help to text book/ reference book/ teacher etc. the teacher should keep the time and allow the group to present their points. Every one in the group should stand up and present each points in the assigned work, everyone should write the points as sentence in their note books. Teacher should check whether they have written the notes. Marks will we given based on the group involvement, writing notes and presentation and for correct answer to the assignment. The group which is presenting the points should be assessed by the teacher and the other groups in the class. The final grade of the group is the average of the teacher’s marks and the marks of any other two group’s.

As it is a group work everyone should help each other and control each other. As the grading will be given based on the average of the individual marks in a group the group members will take care for the good performance of each. The peer influence can be used for helping each other The second group should stand up and present the same and the first and other groups should write down the notes and evaluate the presentation with the indicators. The teacher should not call any group to present instead allow any group to come forward and give a plus point to the group which come first. At the same time all other groups should write down the points presented by first group and make the notes, if the point is different from what they have been assigned.

The teacher can select question for SA and give it as home work. At the succeeding class a unit test based on SA can be conducted and the students should answer individually with in the scheduled time and valuation can be made by exchanging the answer paper and teacher should monitor it. The teacher should give prior information about the class and topic and give some idea about the methodology that may be used to the student for getting prepare and make a discussion among the group. They will come with adequate idea and ready for taking the task as they have a clear idea about the assessment and indicators for assessment. It is better to change the group everyday. Even the slow learner and back ward will come out with the help of the peer group influence, because the grade will affect all. Gradually everyone will come up and perform well.

2. Grouping by interest 3. Grouping by lesson objects 4. Grouping by first alphabet in the name. 5. Grouping by looting/ subject/
