Concept Map

Two forms of language learning: *second language learning (ESL → ELL) *foreign language learning The Basics

1.Demands on Content Area Teachers It is difficult for teachers to teach content to students with limited English proficiency to meet academic standards mandated by the district and state. Technology allows varying levels of ELL students to move at their own pace. ELL Issues

2. Academic & Language Prerequisites for ELLs Typical grade-level content materials are above the reading proficiency levels of ELL students. Background knowledge is as important as the vocabulary and information itself. Websites with visuals and authentic information can help ELLs.

3. The Need to Differentiate Instruction Most ELL classes are not divided according to proficiency level. Technology can track the progress of individual students, and it allows students to work independently while the teacher works with another student one-on-one. ELL Issues

4. Integrating the Students’ Native Languages Students should understand that their native language is a valuable resource, and it can help them make connections when learning English. Technology can assist teachers even when students speak a less common language (ex. machine translation).

Foreign Language Issues 1.Need for Authentic Materials & Perspectives It is challenging to present students with authentic activities, especially when the teacher is not a native speaker of the language. Technology can connect students to speakers from around the world. Ex. Skype, virtual tours, current event articles

Foreign Language Issues 2. Need for Creating Audience & Purpose Students need an audience other than their teacher and classmates. Skype, blogging, and other technology tools give students a reason and means to use the language.

Computer-assisted language learning *also known as CALL *term for using computers in language testing, teaching, and learning

Support for Authentic Oral Language Practice and Assessment ● Videoconferencing ● Multimedia software & interactive/electronic storybooks ● Learning games ● Language labs ● Radio broadcasts ● Podcasts ● Translation websites and handheld devices

Blended Instructional Telecollaborations “international class-to-class partnerships in which projects and tasks are developed by the partner teachers in the collaborating institutions.”

Virtual Field Trips! These can even be applied outside of the ELL or FL classrooms. webquests, virtual tours, videos from recent trips by student or teacher Pro: students can view places they wouldn’t see otherwise Con: limited by funding

Support for Practice in Language Subskills fun, but in depth practice ELL: English Zone, English Banana, English Online, Tower of English FL: Quia

Remain Current! No matter what subject you teach, it is important to remain current so that students are engaged. *More modern, authentic material* 90s Grammar Video vs. Latest Music Video

Video ELL AND ESL

Keep in mind... ● ELL populations are increasing ● ELL teachers are needed! ● Learning a foreign language is beneficial. ● Even if you aren’t an ELL or FL teacher, you will need to be prepared to work with students that are not proficient in English.
