CULTURAL LIFE IN PREŠOV Michaela Scerbakova 1.D

PKO - PARK OF CULTURE AND RELAX This building is situated in the center of Presov. PKO serves the cultural and social needs of the city. The Hall Black Eagle is for its historical character popular place to host weddings, graduations ceremonies, balls, graduations and major social events. It organizes concerts of classical and traditional music as well. The Prešov music spring and autumn, music, performances of professional and amateur artists, programs for children and youth and educational concerts are happened here.. PKO does not operate its business only in the historical building of Black Eagle. It inherently includes five cultural centers, providing space for dance, music, cultural, sporting and social activities for inhabitants of individual parts of the city.

THE JONAS ZABORSKY THEATRE This theatre was founded in seventeenth century. First performances were played in Slovak, Latin, Hungarian, German and Saris. In addition to tours of theaters, which often featured in Presov, it was rather good for the amateur theater instead. Although started as a drama theater, but the program soon began to titles of musical works, which led in 1948 to a new separated component “sing´n play“.

THE A. DUCHNOVIC THEATRE The Alexander Duchnovič Theatre was founded in 1945 as a Ukrainian national Theatre (Rusyn language was officially prohibited). In 1990 after Velvet revolution and fall of communism in Czechoslovakia it was renamed after a priest and social activist of the Rusyn and Ukrainian nations Alexander Duchnovic (Oleksandr Dukhnovych).

THE COUNTY MUSEUM The museum is located in the beautiful premises of Rákóczi palace, which was the founded in the beginning of the 17th century, combining a number of rebuilding the medieval town houses in Renaissance style. The museum is located in the centre of Presov since 1956, and has evolved its content, the type of exhibits and name of the institution. They are currently housed in the buildings historical exhibitions that give visitors a comprehensive look at the historical development of the city and region together with the traditional folk culture.

THE MUSEUM OF WINES Exhibition of wines covers an area of 500 m2 on two floors of historic 500 years old cellars under the city hall. The current offer is of nearly 2,000 kinds of wines. Visitors of the museum are guided by qualified personnel who can speak at least one foreign language. The exposition is accompanied by a gallery of grape varieties used for the production of Slovak wines. Most of the exposed wine is also intended for sale or tasting. There´s a specialized shop, which is a part of the museum. The most beautiful and largest room in the museum is a tasting room. Many of exposed wines aren´t sold nowadays, some of them are from absent generations.

SHOPPING MALL MAX It´s a new and modern building at the biggest Presov estate, called Sekcov. This shopping center was built over 2 years ago. It´s a place where people can enjoy themselves, as well. There are so many places to do activities. E.g. cinema, gym, shops or cafés. In fact, there is a huge amount of fast foods. So you do not have a problem if a hunger´s getting closer to you. In MAX you can also find a gym, just to take a great exercise or some weight – lifting. Max is a comfortable place for all generations.

THE SARIS GALLERY Saris Gallery was founded in 1956 as Regional Gallery in Presov, today bears the name since It´s one of the oldest regional galleries in Slovakia. It originally housed in the building of the Lutheran College. Gallery has built its collection of its own research and data collection, especially shopping. Now gallery owns nearly 4,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints from the 15th - 20th century. It focuses in particular on the North- Eastern Slovakia, but seeks, receives and handles the creation of professional artists from all over the Eastern Slovakia, Slovak important representatives of modern art and personalities associated with the region.
