What is a word processor? Software that allows a user to input, edit, organize and format text. Examples Include: – MS Word $ – Word Pad Free – Pages$20.00 – WordPerfect$ in 7 people use MS Office (that is about 1.1 billion people)

Open Source / Free Alternatives Open Source – – Cloud Based (and free) – Google Docs

Terminology Margins: An invisible barrier that contains the text on a page. Measured form the top, bottom, left and right edge inward. The margin applies to an entire page.

Terminology Alignment (aka Justification): How text is placed on the page relative to the margins. Common horizontal alignment includes: Left, Right, Center and Full (or Justified).

Terminology Indent: The distance text is set away from the margin. Measured from the left and right margins. Header / Footer: Text above the top margin / Text Below the bottom margin. Same on every page

Terminology Tab: A special character that allows for a predetermined measurement of space set by the user. Usually used for indentation of a paragraph and creating equally spaced lists. Line Spacing: The # of empty lines of blank space between each line of text. Single spacing is NO empty lines. Double spacing is 1 empty line between each line of text. Triple Spacing is 2 empty lines.

Terminology Tab: A special character that allows for a predetermined measurement of space set by the user. Usually used for indentation of a paragraph and creating equally spaced lists. Single Spacing Double Spacing Triple Spacing How empty lines of space in a 21 spaced document? What about 1.5 spacing? Line Spacing: Are you actually reading this? Did you think I wouldn’t put any useful information in here – this isn’t just filler you know. Ok, you got me, this is actually just filler to demonstrate double spacing Margins: A word of advice. Don’t ever, EVER use triple spacing for an English assignment. If you want to make your essay longer, do more research and write more.

Terminology Word Wrap: This is when the words automatically move to the next line without pressing the Enter Key. Also known as a soft return. This helps define what makes a paragraph. Hard Return: When you press the enter key to move to the next line. This starts a new paragraph.
