Locating Books and E-books In NovaCat Books are usually a great reference for research and papers. 1.Open a browser and navigate to NovaCat. 2.Run a keyword search on the topic of your choice. 3.What is the material type of the first result? Is it a print book, e- book, or a web resource? What is a quick way to tell? 4.Find the first print book in your results. 5.Is it available? 6.If available, would you be able to check it out or order it? Why or why not?

Part 2: Using The Databases To Search For Dissertations

Go to Databases by Subject

Use the MARPs database for FSE dissertations

First see

Dissertations and Theses from ProQuest: Contains over 1.4 million full-text dissertations

Search tricks! * and “ “

Searching for Scholarly Articles

Part 4: Using Journal Finder

Swearer, S. M., Espelage, D. L., Vaillancourt, T., & Hymel, S. (2010). What can be done about school bullying? Linking research to educational practice. Educational Researcher, 39(1), doi: / X If you need to find a specific article, search for the name of the journal, not the title of the article, first.

Click on Document Delivery/ILLiad to begin your request

Part 5: Using FindIt!

When to use Find It! FindIt! has several possibilities: Item is easily available, Item has to be located, or… Item has to be ordered

Option #1 Find IT! provides direct link to full text

If you land on HTML version, switch to PDF

Option #2: Sometimes FindIt! knows article is available, but doesn’t link to it directly

Browse to article, similar to Journal Finder

Scroll through the table of contents to find item

Option #3 in FindIt!: Use Journal Finder

Follow the steps previous demonstrated for Journal Finder

Option #4 no full text in FindIt!

If no direct link is available, try Journal Finder first

If Journal Finder returns zero results and you really want item…

…order through ILLiad Local students may want to see if library carries the print version of the journal

Link will open Article Request form and fill it out for you; scroll down to submit the request

notification that the item is ready; 2 business days to 2 weeks, depending on availability

Item should be downloaded & saved and/or printed out

Part 6: APA citation style

APA Resources  Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed.)  APA help / tutorials:    Fischler School of Education doctoral students must also see:

Citing Journals and Web pages Citation of an article: : Citation of a Youtube video: University of Chicago. (2007, December 12). European cartographers and the Ottoman world, [Video file]. Retrieved from Ingham, R., Warner, A., Byrd, A., & Cotton, J. (2006). Speech effort measurement and stuttering: Investigating the chorus reading effect. Journal of Speech, Language & Hearing Research, 49(3), doi: / (2006/048)

Example of a DOI

The library has a DOI lookup tool

Use article title & first author’s last name

Copy the DOI and paste to the end of a citation

Correct article citation with DOI (do not bold, hyperlink or add color) Ingham, R., Warner, A., Byrd, A., & Cotton, J. (2006). Speech effort measurement and stuttering: Investigating the chorus reading effect. Journal of Speech, Language & Hearing Research, 49(3), doi: / (2006/048) What is the purpose of the DOI?

The DOI is used to link to full text

The DOI serves as a quick link to full text

Software citation helpers: Beware of errors

APA citation assistance in ProQuest: Checkmark, then use Cite

Spot check and fix any errors See next screen for corrections

APA citations with Fischler School modifications: Single spaced but double between citations / Nothing at the end if no DOI

Part 7: Citation tracking/landmark studies: Using Web of Science

Part 8: “Theoretical Perspective”

Doesn’t happen often, but sometimes the title mentions the framework

Sometimes it is clearly mentioned in a subheading

There should always be a citation to help you track down the theory used.

Sometime the theory is from another discipline but the authors explain why it is relevant to THIS research – a student may to have to do this step.

Try theor / or framework / or conceptual / or perspective Use the FIND feature to search within the article (do NOT truncate with asterisk!)

Sometimes the theory was mentioned earlier, but not necessarily labeled. In other words, sometimes it is clearly stated, other times it is inferred.
