Passive and Active Voice 8 th Grade Language Arts

active and passive voice to convey certain effects  Writers use active and passive voice to convey certain effects.  You should understand and use these voices correctly and deliberately.

Active Voice emphasis on who or what is performing the action  Use active voice to put the emphasis on who or what is performing the action of the verb rather than on the verb itself  Example: Harrison removed his handicaps

Passive Voice contains some form of “be” (is, was, were, was being, has been, etc.) past participle  The passive voice contains some form of “be” (is, was, were, was being, has been, etc.) plus a past participle of the verb.  Example: The handicaps were removed by Harrison.

Active vs. Passive Structure  ACTIVE: Doer  Verb  Receiver  You stole the cookie from the cookie jar  PASSIVE: Receiver  Verb  Doer  The cookie was stolen from the cookie jar

Notice a Difference?

**Do not mix active and passive constructions in the same sentence** was added  “ The Handicapper General approved the new handicaps, and a new amendment was added.  Should be Recast as: added  “The Handicapper General approved the new handicaps and added the new amendment.”
