Changing from active into passive: The object becomes the subject, and the previous subject can be omitted e.g. People use thousands of plastic bags every day  Thousands of plastic bags are used every day. The active verb changes into a passive form (past participle) e.g. steal/stole/stolen, write/wrote/written) The verb-to-be has to be in the right tense (verb-to- be = is/am/are, was/were, be/been/being) The policeman was chasing the thief  The thief was being chased by the policeman.

Only verbs that take an object (transitive verbs) can have passive forms. I go to school every day.  X The school was gone by me every day. I ride the bicycle every day.  The bicycle is ridden every day.

Thousands of people visit the exhibition every day.  The exhibition is visited by thousands of people every day. Mary is busy drawing a picture.  A picture is being drawn by Mary. You have to clean your desk.  Your desk has to be cleaned. I went to the police station yesterday.  I was robbed by someone. I have forgotten to bring back my homework.  I have been scolded by Mr. Wong.
