DAY ONE Romeo and Juliet Terms

MONOLOGUE A single character gives a speech

SOLILOQUY A single character gives a speech while they are ALONE on stage

ASIDE A character reveal their true feelings by addressing the audience. The device is based on the premise that while they are not alone on stage, the other characters are not supposed to hear them.

EXTERNAL CONFLICT A conflict between a person and an outside force

INTERNAL CONFLICT A conflict between a person and themselves

SITUATIONAL IRONY We think one ‘situation’ will happen, but another does

VERBAL IRONY A character says one thing but means another

DRAMATIC IRONY The audience knows more than the characters

RHYMING COUPLET A pair of lines in poetry that rhyme A pair= 2 lines

Style The way specific authors write. Their voice through their writing.
