Fluency When you read aloud you should use expression to show character’s thoughts and feelings and to interpret the events. Think about what is happening in the story. Is the mood happy? Sad? Exciting? Scary? I am going to read a part of “A Pen Pal for Max” aloud. I am going to change the tone and expression in my voice when different characters speak and to show how they are feeling. I am also going to pay attention to the mood of the story and change my expression to show the mood. Turn to page 344. T176

Fluency Read with expression. Raise and lower your voice to show which character is speaking, characters’ feelings, and whether events are exciting. think about what is happening in the story. Plot The plot is the events in a story. Remember a plot has a beginning, a middle, and an ending. It tells about the problem that the characters face and the solution to that problem. T177

Synonyms and Antonyms  The plant will not flourish in the sun. It will probably die.  When I read the first sentence, I am not sure what flourish means. So I read the second sentence for clues. I read that the plant “will probably die.” That makes me think that flourish is the opposite of die.  Remember that a word that means the opposite of another word is called an antonym.  A word that means the same as another word is called a synonym. Synonyms & Antonyms  The hamlet was on a cliff above the sea. The village was so small, it was not on the map.  Hamlet and village are synonyms.  Tony waited for his friend to respond, but he did not answer.  Anya did not mean to break the vase.
