Learner Objectives O Describe how science and scientists follow processes of systematically making observations, asking questions, making predictions, taking measurements, collecting data, and coming to decisions based on evidence. O Describe how scientific knowledge changes in the light of new evidence or interpretation of data. O Identify ways to bring the scientific process into the classroom as a teaching and learning tool. O Recognize that science is not a linear process (list of steps to follow) but is very complex.

Essential Questions O What is science and what do scientists do? Materials for this session: O How a Scientist Works Flow Chart O Science in Action video “How Science Works.” O Tenets of the Nature of Science O Tangram and Mystery Powder activity O Understanding The True Meaning of NOS

Cooperative Learning Groups & Responsibilities Group 1Group 2Group 3Group 4 James Karen Jay Yvonne Vernette Alicia Njeri Kelly Group LeaderTask ManagerMaterials ManagerRecorder Liaison between group and teacher Group speaker Ensure all members are participating, on task, and keeps track of time. Collects and returns all materials for group Records all information necessary on chart paper to reflect participants thoughts and ideas

Task 1: STUDENT ACTIVITY: The Extra Piece 1. Each of the pieces you received in your envelope represent current scientific data. 2. Arrange the pieces into a square. 3. A new scientific discovery has been made 4. Incorporate this new information into your tangram. Part 1: What is the Nature of Science??

Reflection Were we doing science?

Task 2: STUDENT ACTIVITY: Mystery Powders O “I was getting ready to bake the other day and I measured several types of white powder. I received a Twitter message and went to check it. When I returned to the kitchen I realized I had neglected to label the 4 powders and now I have FOUR “mystery powder” batches. What can I do to correctly identify and distinguish between Powder 1, Powder 2, Powder 3 and Powder 4 without tasting them? “ 1. Write a prediction to identify what you think each white powder is 2. Write an explanation for how you would identify each of the powders first. 3. If you need to revise or add to your explanations from steps 1 and 2, do so. At the table in front are some materials provided to help you. 4. NOW EXPERIMENT!! 5. Record data (observations) for each test. 6. Make your final conclusions about what each white powder is. Part 1: What is the Nature of Science??

Reflection 1. How confident are you about your predictions and/or conclusions? If you were scientists, would you be prepared to publish your findings in an academic journal, present them at a prestigious conference or stake your reputation and careers on your findings? 2. What could you do to be more confident? 3. Were we doing science?

HOW SCIENCE WORKS

Steps of Scientific MethodScientific Method

Reflection 1.) How do the two activities differ from the Scientific Method that we tend to see in most textbooks.Scientific Method 2.) Return to your original descriptions of How Science Works. Would you make any changes? Why or why not? homework

Homework Blogging O Read the article on Tenets of the Nature of Science. Reflect on ONE of the activities we did  The Extra Piece  Mystery Powders o Discuss how 1 or 2 of the tenets apply to what you did in any of these activities O Submit your online response prior to the next session.
