Training & Promotion for Digital Archives Project - Taiwan Experience - Ming-der Wu, Wan-jung Chiu National Taiwan University Training & Promotion Division, National Digital Archives Program Office

Training & Promotion Division, NDAP Operated since August, 1998 – Digital Museum Project Renamed or reorganized in 2002 – NDAP Personnel - Coordinator (1) - Associate coordinator (1) - Assistant (6 full time, 3 part-time)

Objectives To organize workshops for NDAP participants To facilitate the experiences sharing among NDAP participants To publicize the outcomes of NDAP To assist school teachers to utilize the products of NDAP in their classroom teaching

Training Program - Outcomes 20+ sessions; seven sessions per year 2500 participants; 150 participants per session 20+ courses

Information Gathering for Needs Assessment We analyze the required skills for archive digitization We use questionnaires to survey participants’ opinions about the current and future courses We interviewed participants Suggestions from project meetings New technology developed by R&D Division, NDAP

Backgrounds of Participants Participants with their backgrounds in the fields of library science, computer science, and content domains. One- thirds each. Ideally, we should arrange different training courses for participants with different backgrounds

Backgrounds of Participants Archive digitization is an interdisciplinary work Participants like to know what others are doing Training courses are designed for all participants

Backgrounds of Participants Variety of participants background made it difficult for instructors to prepare their teaching materials We gather information about participants background, e.g. their institutions, and titles List of participants is available to instructors

Backgrounds of Participants We ask participant to write down their questions in advance, and we forward those questions to instructors Course outlines are available on the Division’s website. Participants can decide whether they like to attend or not

Backgrounds of Participants Most participants are part-time members of the NDAP Training courses should not interfere with participants full-time jobs

Backgrounds of Participants Training courses should not exceed two days Some training course are offer twice, therefore, participants can choose the most appropriate time for them

Evaluation Formative evaluation - get feedback from instructor before a course was designed in order to make necessary revisions on topic and content Summative evaluation - questionnaires are used to gather information about comments on course content, instructional materials, instructor’s performance, etc.

Workshops for School Teachers To achieve the objective of assisting school teachers to utilize the products of NDAP in their classroom teaching Six workshops were conducted at 5 different places around the island in this year

Instructional Design Contest Winners of the Contest were invited to attend a workshop to sharing experiences about works they designed Winners’ works are available on the Division’s website

Taipei International Book Exhibition Taipei International Book Exhibition was held in February The Division attended the Exhibition to promote the outcomes of NDAP More than 5,000 people visited our booth Brochures and souvenirs about NDAP were given away to visitors

Taipei International Book Exhibition Games and quiz were designed to attract visitors to browse NDAP websites Two lectures about NDAP were delivered to the public on site

Promotion Activities on Mass Media To publicize the outcomes of NDAP via mass media A program entitled ‘The Adventures of Digital Archives’ was designed to attract people to visit NDAP websites The Program was co-organized with UDN Website - a famous newspaper website

Promotion Activities on Mass Media Information about the Program’s activities was announced on newspaper, Yahoo! Homepage Hundreds of prize were awarded to participants

‘The Adventures of Digital Archives’ Quiz game - participants needed to browse NDAP websites in order to answer questions Short essay contest - participants needed to write a 50-word essay to describe their thoughts of NDAP to friends - participants needed to the Program information to three friends
