5 Recent University Initiatives Learning Management System Discussion Group Teaching online initiative (began in 2009) Development of high quality online courses Require faculty members to take a workshop Provide stipends Quality Matters rubric for course review process Renew DU (just getting started) A Catalyst for Learning: Hybrid Courses Across the Curriculum Built on NSM hybrid course initiative (2012-13) Work with 15 faculty members from several departments to develop hybrid courses Interdisciplinary Center for Data Analysis and Information Visualization Collaboration between OTL, UTS, several departments & the library

7 Types of Workshops Workshops about issues and topics related to teaching and learning How Learning Works, Teaching International Students, Teaching for Transfer, etc. How-to workshops about educational web-based software/technologies Blackboard, AdobeConnect, CamtasiaRelay, Smart Pens, Clickers, Smartphones, Tablets Targeted intensive workshops Teaching Online Workshop, Teaching Hybrid Workshop, New Faculty Workshop, Adjunct Faculty Workshop More than 300 faculty members participate in more than 30 workshops yearly

8 New Faculty Workshop 5-week online workshop available before fall term Introduces new faculty to DU resources & the latest best practice in higher education pedagogy and educational technology. Last year 64 new faculty members completed the workshop (75%), and 94% of those agreed that the workshop would help them be more effective in their teaching at DU. 11 Innovative web-based systems The result of collaborations with DU faculty members and academic units to provide enhanced educational tools that are not available commercially or open source.

12 Assess-It! Facilitates academic program assessment Created in collaboration with the Director of Assessment Faculty develops learning outcomes for program Faculty determines how proficiency will be demonstrated by students in program (course assignments, tests, oral responses, etc.) Assessment protocol added to system (including rubrics) Students prompted to complete assessment (upload the specified assignment, complete a test, etc) Results available/downloadable as spreadsheet for evaluation/analysis Used by 72 programs, contains 83 rubrics and 229 tests, surveys, performance reviews

14 DU CourseMedia Response to the demise of the slide projector in 2000 User friendly way to find & deliver media for teaching & learning Adherence to fair use principles & respect for intellectual property Students log in - may only see materials while course is offered Videos are streamed Contains 63,000 images, 6,000 videos, 2800 audio files (+ metadata) Now used by faculty & students across the university Average usage by term 300 courses & faculty members 2000 students
