Climate Change & Ireland

Ireland’s emissions Historic responsibility for climate change lies with richer industrialised countries. –USA: 24 tonnes per person –Ireland 17 tonnes per person

What’s been done? Carbon Budgets Carbon tax Renewable Energy Directive VRT changes Greener/Warmer Homes grants Climate Bill?

Stop Climate Chaos A coalition of 26 youth, environmental development, religious organisations…

A coalition of 30 civil society organisations –Environmental groups –Faith-based organisations –Individuals –Development organisations –Community groups

….campaigning to ensure Ireland plays its part in preventing runaway climate change

Call to action – 2ºC Stop Climate Chaos calls on the Government to: 1. Push for an international agreement to keep the rise in global temperatures to 2ºC or less. This means global greenhouse gas emissions must reach their peak and begin to decline irreversibly within 10 years.

Call to Action 2 – Climate Law 2. Ensure Ireland does its fair share to prevent climate chaos by implementing the polluter pays principle and immediately bringing in a climate change law which provides for an annual Carbon Budget and 3% year-on-year reduction in Irish GHG emissions.

Call to Action 3 – support developing countries 3. Ensure developing countries can access additional, appropriate and adequate resources to enable them to adapt to the current and future impacts of climate change.

Call to Action 4 – protect natural environment 4. Ensure that national environment considerations are integrated into adaptation and mitigation strategies for dealing with climate change
