Eucard-WP7-HFM 10 th Collaboration Meeting at LASA Milano The first SMC coil using 11T type cable has been wound in July 2012 The coil will be heat treated after the reaction of SMC#3_b coils (end of November2012) Cold powering tests planed for Q1_2013 J.C. Perez TE/MSC-MDT 7

Eucard-WP7-HFM 10 th Collaboration Meeting at LASA Milano The retro-fitting of the “Borel” reaction furnace has been launched in summer 2011 After several thermal cycles necessary to calibrate the furnace and reduce the over-shoot, the temperature control is fully operational Several runs with samples of Nb 3 Sn have been made and Jc measurements have been performed to validate the cycles The sarcophagi and all pipes for injection and exhaust of the Ar gas have been cleaned A new O 2 trap system has been installed A security valve calibrated at 300 mbar has been added onto the return gas circuit to avoid overpressure in the sarcophagi during the heat treatment process A new heat treatment cycle with 6 wire samples, copper and stainless steel cylinders, has started last week to confirm that the treated pieces are not polluted during the treatment J.C. Eucard-WP7-HFM 10 th Collaboration Meeting at LASA Milano A new reaction furnace to treat SMC like coils has been ordered and will be CERN Main characteristics: Hood furnace C Thermal stability ± 3 0 C Retort (L x W x H) 730x300x400 mm Inert gas circulation O 2 analyser 10 thermocouples for temperature monitoring and control Delivery and CERN expected for end of October 2012 This will make the SMC line independent from other magnet programs J.C. Eucard-WP7-HFM 10 th Collaboration Meeting at LASA Milano RMC project was accepted in December 2011 All fabrication drawings completed by end of March 2012 A call for tender for mechanical structure launched in April 2012 The order of the structure components has been placed in a Spanish company and the delivery is expected by end of November 2012 Coil parts and reaction mold have been ordered and delivered in June 2012 Ti central islands and stainless steel spacers have been plasma spray coated using Al 2 O 3 The order for the close impregnation mold has been placed. Delivery is expected for October 2012 The first length of copper cable, insulated using 66 Tex S2-Glass fiber braiding technique, will be delivered end of September 2012 First winding tests, using dummy Cu cable, are scheduled in October 2012 First mechanical assembly after structure instrumentation are planed for Q J.C. We aim avoiding de-sizing A full palette of material has been procured and delivered at CERN on the 11/09. It has required special production for us that has taken the whole summer Next steps – Repetition of test on “virgin” yarn – Bonding test on fibers before and after reaction – Bonding and mechanical test on fibers with ceramic binders before curing, after 1 and 2 curing, after reaction and in function of ceramic binder quantities We have also identified supplier ready to braid for us tapes from our S yarns (collaboration with RAL) Courtesy of Polymer Laboratory J.C.
