CERN/CEA Collaboration agreement No. KE2275/TE WP5 – HTS insert Meeting 04/09/2015

Content Insert design Detailed design status Magnet fabrication status Summary and Next steps Milestones 04/09/2015 CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 2

New Insert Design (2014) B0 = 5.4 T Je= 250 A/mm2 Bpeak= 5,87 T Inom = 2760 A Insert Design CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 04/09/2015 3 double layers coils Layer 1/1bis : 33 turns Layer 2 : 26 turns Layer 3 : 11 turns External tube, 5.5 mm thick Nitronic 40 - 8 parts, 100 mm long - Thermal shrinkage - TIG welding External pads, 316L 15 100-mm long parts 2 50-mm long parts Iron pole Compression plates, 316L Glass epoxy inter-coil and external insulation No more welded 3 Layer 1 Layer 2 Layer 3

Insert Design Mechanical Structure Phase I, stand-alone mode : we will use a demountable mechanical structure (assembly less risky and faster, possibility to adjust the pre-stress, possibility to quickly and easily open the magnet) Phase 2, insert mode in Fresca 2 : demountable structure replaced by the 5.5 mm thick tube (heat-shrink method) 04/09/2015 Phase 1Phase 2 CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 4 ø 99 mm 130 mm CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 04/09/2015 800 mm

Insert Design Impact of persistent currents (B ⊥ and B // ) and of imbalanced currents on the central field have been computed. Results have been used to position hall probs. 04/09/2015 CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 5 04/09/2015 Persistant Inter-filament max B y = +25 mT 5-25 seconds Imbalanced max B x = 20 mT max ΔB y = 36 mT time = long Persistant due to perp field max B y = - 700 mT time = long

800 mm Magnet detailed design status CAD detailed design of the insert completed Mandrel ends have been modified to optimize layer transition End saddles designed taking into account new coil dimensions Mechanical structure for standalone tests Coil handling tooling (for magnet assembly) Interface with the test station to be designed CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 04/09/2015 6 CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 04/09/2015 130 mm

Magnet components procurement Cable HTS tape: 2 unit lengths (UL) of 40 m received November 2013 2 unit lengths of 40 m received April 2015 2 units lengths of 110 m received April 2015 CuBe2 Stabliizer: 1.2 km of CuBe2 tape procured by LNCMI during EuCARD program 880 m annealed at CEA (3h at 300 °C in Argon). First insulation realized by HPFoil in February 2015 unsatisfactory, too large New insulation ongoing Dummy SS tape procured CA No. KE2275/TE - WP5 - HTS Insert 04/09/2015 7
