EuCARD-WP7-HFM meeting 15 November 2011 Status of construction of FRESCA2 dummy coil assembly Attilio Milanese, Juan Carlos Perez

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese2 Hardware for FRESCA2 In progress: aluminium alloy shell raw material components for the “dummy coil assembly” cryostat aluminium oxide insulating coating Nb 3 Sn reaction oven winding tooling (layer 3-4) components for the external splices [superconducting cable] To be done: components for the “coil pack”: islands, end shoes, wedges winding (layer 1-2)/ reaction / impregnation tooling assembly tooling cable insulation, traces and other instrumentation

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese3 Procurement of mechanical components All the components will be used for the real magnet, with the exception of the dummy coils, that are two blocks of Al alloy. The order for the Al alloy (AA 7175 T652) raw cylinder was placed mid Sept. 2011 in France. We agreed on alloy characteristics and controls (material certificate, ultrasonic inspection, tensile test at room and cryogenic temperatures). The expected delivery is in mid Jan. 2012. The procurement of the other components has been split in three lots, as follows: cold mass: half yokes, shell, keys and slipshims coil pack mock up: horizontal and vertical pads, coil mock-up axial compression system: end plate, rods, components for pre-tension at room temperature

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese4 Procurement of mechanical components On the basis of the call for tender, three firms are considered: cold mass: Spanish company coil pack mock up:Dutch company axial compression system: Finnish company We visited the Dutch and Spanish companies in Oct. 2011, to discuss the details of the fabrication and to evaluate their manufacturing capabilities. In both cases the feedback is positive. There is no need to visit the Finnish company. In all cases, the lead time from the placement of the order (which could be by the end of Nov. 2011, if the updated drawings are ready) to delivery is around 3 ½ - 4 months. The sum of the three orders is ≈ 150 kEUR (without the Al cylinder, which is an extra ≈ 30 kEUR).

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese5 FRESCA2 cryostat [from Arnaud Vande Craen, Pierre Minginette, Vladislav Benda] The conceptual design of the cryostat is finished. The engineering design is on-going, as well as the design of the cryogenic lines. The call for tenders for the components should be published at the beginning of 2012. Also in that case the lot will be probably split in several parts. By end of 2012 all the components should be delivered at CERN. The cryostat should be operational at the beginning of 2013.

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese6 Others The feasibility of the aluminium oxide coating for the pieces of FRESCA2 in contact with the coil is done. Our supplier gave us a quote for the plasma ceramic coating Al 2 O 3 with bondcoat, coating thickness 0.1 – 0.2 mm. The order of the Nb 3 Sn reaction oven has been signed at the end of October. It will be manufactured by a German company. The working volume has been specified as 2500 × 600 × 500 mm. It’s an argon furnace. The delivery is envisaged for end of May, beginning of June 2012 [Friedrich Lackner].

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese7 Study of splice layout The geometry of the Nb 3 Sn / Nb-Ti splice is being modelled in detail, as well as the Nb-Ti / Nb-Ti splices external to the magnet [Marc Timmins]

15 Nov. 2011, A. Milanese8 Thank you.
