FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay FReSCa2 Technical Review June 2015 CEA Saclay J.C Perez on behalf of Fresca2 collaboration team

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay Coil winding (see presentation from F. Rondeaux) Coils heat treatment Splicing Instrumentation Impregnation process Electrical tests Conclusions June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 2

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay 2 copper coils (1 * layer 3-4 and 1 * layer 1-2) have been reacted with reduced heat treatment cycles Several dilatation tests performed with 4 turns configuration and filling pieces Real coils thermal cycles will be adapted to compensate the delays to reach the different “plateaux” June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 3 23h delay 11h delay 3h delay

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay Splicing operation procedure has been fully qualified during RMC coils production and FReSCa2 copper coils fabrication. Lessons learned used to implement minor components modification to the splice area components June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 4 Monolithic cable holder piece during heat treatment cycle divided in two pieces for easier and safer access to the Nb 3 Sn reacted cable for splicing operation New end-shoe pocket geometry to improve the post-impregnation process quality New and simplified geometry for splice area insulation pieces

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay Instrumentation procedure and traces fabrication process validated Low quality traces (first fabrication trials at CERN) installed on two copper coils No show-stoppers identified June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 5 TRACE: QH + V TAPS 50  m Kapton + 25  m SS

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay Coils impregnated using epoxy resin CTD 101K Impregnation mold difficult to close (leaks). Mold modifications foreseen for next coil impregnation Several problems identified during RMC & FReSCa2 coils impregnation – Filter installed at the injection points to stop particles flowing with the resin – Injection points modified to guarantee a good resin flow over the coil (no Kapton in front of the injection holes) June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 6

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay V TAPS continuity measurements OK Dielectric measurements – Insulation QH/end-shoe up to 10 KV on coil 3-4 – Insulation coil to end-shoe to be improved Coil discharge tests up to 2 kV in coil 3-4 and 10 kV on coil 1-2 QH discharge tests – 8/8 QH OK on coil 3-4 – 3 QH damaged on coil 1-2 (certainly due to trace quality and manipulations during first instrumentation trials) June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 7

FReSCa2 Technical Review, 9 th June 2015, CEA Saclay June 9th 2015 Juan Carlos Perez TE-MSC 8 Coils heat treatment: delays to reach the plateaux due to inertia of the reaction tooling to be compensated Splicing: mastered (see results on RMC coils) but some modifications required on the splice area components Instrumentation: mastered (see RMC tests results) Traces scaled up for FReSCa2 copper coil Impregnation process: Impregnation mould closing operation process difficult. Leaks detected during copper coil preparation. Electrical tests: Mitigated results (non identified particular reason and not coherent with RMC coils results). Long delays, due to CERN lack of manpower, from coil delivery date to coil impregnation More generally speaking from the present experience with RMC and FReSCa2 copper coils, NO SHOW STOPPERS have been identified for the above described fabrication steps.

TE-MSC-MDT Thank you for your attention Special thanks to H. Bajas, N. Bourcey, P. Ferracin, R. Gauthier, G. Maury, N. Peray and F-O. Pincot for their contribution.
