Issues for Continued Operation Pre-Acc PVC piping is used for the main piping to and from the H- Skid. The PVC piping is old and is prone to failure. PVC piping is used for the main piping to and from the Water Resistors Skid. The PVC piping is old and is prone to failure.

Issues for Continued Operation LINAC PVC piping is used for the for much of the LCW piping for Low Energy LINAC equipment cooling. PVC piping is used for the main piping to and from the Skids to the Water Control Panels and then to and from the equipment needed LCW flow.

Issues for Continued Operation Booster Many of the isolation valves installed in the LCW piping in the Booster Enclosureare are inoperable, leaking, and/or have failed. Excessive drain down of the LCW mains are required to make repairs. Many of the (38) RF Cavity LCW branch isolation valves installed in the Booster Enclosure are leaking. Many of the bus LCW Y-Strainer caps are leaking and are hard to remove and replace, and many of the bus LCW Y-Strainer isolation ball valves are leaking.

Issues for Continued Operation Booster (continued) LCW Capacity – Heat Load Capacity is OK – Flow Capacity is NOT OK Wasted at numerous bypasses directly from the Booster 95 LCW supply piping to the return piping. Result is inefficient use of flow capacity and available delta T. Approximately 310 GPM of the current Booster 95 LCW total flow of 3,160 GPM is bypassed. Demand for additional Booster 95 LCW will increase as more SSDs, other equipment, and the E906 Experiment are installed or placed into operation. Booster Return Pumps – Antiquated, on borrowed time – Operating at a flow rate 960 gpm over their design point of 2,200 gpm. This flow rate of 3,160 gpm means that the return pumps are operating way to the right on their pump curves. Booster 95 LCW Return Piping Upgrade Project – Aid LCW System balancing and flow capacity efficiency, “flow breathing” – Not completed – connection piping of the new larger return piping in the Booster Galleries back to the CUB has not been completed. Instrumentation is antiquated.

Summary The Proton Source Water Systems is in surprisingly good shape. Two key areas of concern remain Low Energy (201 MHz Drift Tube)LINAC Booster 95 LCW System
