Cognitive Emotional Learning & Esteem Building 2

Classroom Dynamics & Manageability It is imperative to incorporate a classroom dynamic that is inclusive of the thoughts and feelings of the students. The teacher and the student both should have a clear understanding of each others role. The dynamics of the classroom is an important variable related to school learning (Wang, Haertel, & Walberg, 1990) Teachers attitudes Student perceptions

Behavioral Issues *Bullying *Disrespectful &Defiant Behaviors *Academic failure *Low Self-esteem/Peer Pressure *Physical & verbal aggression How to achieve better responses from students Modify teaching styles Take the time to get to know your students Go the extra mile Being prepared and flexible Building a positive relationship with the students Understand that they may not have the language, comfort, or confidence to communicate effectively Parental involvement Reciprocity of respect Follow through ( Mean what you say and say what you mean) Home life Community School

Recognizing the Indicators Domestic Violence Death of a loved one Suicide attempts Peer Pressure Poverty Drug addicted parent (s) Reversed/ Projected Roles

Allowing the Students to be heard… (Kaidy’s story) 6

Exploring the familial make up through the eyes of a child.

My Inspiration

What is family? Adult views vs. Children’s views A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household

Family is “the people in your life who love you the most”.

Family Dynamics Family structures and dynamics have changed tremendously in recent years: Single Parents Adoption Foster Parents Step Families Nuclear Families Same Sex Parents

Unmasking the myths What is your philosophy of teaching? What is your teaching style? Your reality may not be what your fellow teachers reality is.

What is the role of each person in your household?

History of Family Development The study of family history has shown that family systems are flexible, culturally diverse and adaptive to ecological and economical conditions. (van den Berghe 1979)

Therapeutic treatment Play therapy Art therapy Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Grief and Loss

Engaging Clients/ Students The ideas utilized in this workbook are derivative of various therapeutic approaches. Approaches that when used effectively will aid children in blossoming into productive beings in society with an increased vocabulary to emphasize feelings. These approaches will allow them to be resilient and to gain the idea that a past event or circumstance doesn’t necessarily have to determine where one ends up in life. Some of the most commonly utilized therapeutic models utilized in creating these activities are listed below. Art therapy Cognitive behavior therapy Grief and Loss Family therapy Narrative therapy Reality therapy Reflective analysis

“Children are able to understand that although they are different they have a lot of similarities to their peers and classmates” “I am not alone” “This activity allowed me to see things from my child’s point of view”

My story, your story, and their story

Attributes of a Concrete family Love Safety Security

* Extend Lessons. *Incorporate various dialogues. *Assist children in developing the language necessary to express themselves in an age appropriate manner. * Higher sense of self. *Insight into what the children are bringing into the classroom.
