Presentation transcript:

Initial Mentor Training Aims Explore the subject specialist mentoring process Investigate the role of the subject specialist mentor Consider issues involved in an initial subject specialist mentoring meeting

Initial Mentor Training A minimum requirement for subject specialist mentors Satisfactory completion recorded on the University of Huddersfield mentor database Subject specialist mentors expected to undertake further professional development as part of their individual CPD and will be encouraged to complete mentor qualifications

Self evaluation - minimum subject specialist mentor profile All trainees are required to identify an appropriate subject specialist mentor. This mentor should meet the minimum subject specialist mentor profile

Self evaluation - desirable subject specialist mentor profile Desirable subject specialist mentor profile will be used as a basis for the development of subject specialist mentors Self evaluation against the desirable subject specialist mentor profile will determine opportunities for personal and professional development to feed into an action plan

Personal skills self evaluation Assess your own potential as a subject specialist mentor by indicating on the continuum whether each item listed is a strength or an area identified for further development. Feeds into action plan for personal and professional development.

Mentoring issues Read the list of comments about mentoring and check each one true or false.

Mentor = “Experienced and trusted adviser” (OED) Origin in Homer’s Odyssey? When he was departing to fight in the Trojan Wars, Odysseus asked Mentor to look after his household and teach his son, Telemachus. Odysseus was away for 10 years, during which time Mentor fulfilled his promise of care.

Mentoring Means…… Jot down one word answers: What is a subject specialist mentor? What is subject specialist mentoring?

What are the benefits of mentoring: For the subject specialist mentor? For the trainee? For the organisation?

Questions a subject specialist mentor might ask What do I want from the subject specialist mentoring process? What can I bring to the subject specialist mentoring process? Whom do I know who would benefit from the process? What can I offer them? What am I looking for in return?

Initial Meeting Clips Points for discussion
