Rational use of Drugs - Definition Rational use of drugs requires that “patients receive medications appropriate to their clinical needs, in doses that meet their own individual requirements, for an adequate period of time, and at the lowest cost to them and their community” It’s a term or concept coined at the conference on RUD, convened by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Nairobi in 1985. This concept has been adopted by almost every nation

Criteria of Judging RUD Overuse, underuse or misuse of drugs Poly-pharmacy Inappropriate use of antibiotics Inappropriate use of multivitamins Overuse of injection when oral formulation is appropriate Failure to prescribe in accordance with clinical guidelines Prescription of unnecessary expensive drugs only

Methodology 250 prescription from each state Collection from large and medium hospitals Investigator can stand outside hospitals and identify patients Rapport building with patients Collect from only those who are willing Prescription only from outpatients Collect medical bills (photocopies) Framework for the analysis provided by CUTS
