A Multiplication Algorithm Partial Products A Multiplication Algorithm

Partial Products “In the Partial Products algorithm, each factor is thought of as a sum of ones, tens, hundreds and so on.” This method relies on the understanding of place value and requires students to think of the whole number – not the individual digits. Each part of one factors is multiplied by each part of the other factor. Then all of the products are added. This method uses the Distributive Property of Multiplication repeatedly. This method previews a procedure for multiplication that is used in algebra classes in junior high and high school. Based on EM resources

6 7 X 5 3 3,000 350 180 21 + 3,551 Partial Products Add the results To find 67 x 53, think of 67 as 60 + 7 and 53 as 50 + 3. Then multiply each part of one sum by each part of the other, and add the results. 3,000 Calculate 50 X 60 350 Calculate 50 X 7 180 Calculate 3 X 60 21 + Calculate 3 X 7 3,551 Add the results
