Job Applications Ms. Turner

Purpose of Job Application To be hired for a job Standardized way for employers to obtain information

Goal To get an interview!

Be Prepared! Take with you: ◦ Resume ◦ SS card ◦ Driver’s license ◦ Lists of addresses of previous employers ◦ Salaries from previous jobs ◦ References (names, addresses, and contact info) ◦ Can’t have too much info

NEVER Lie Never, ever, ever lie on your application! You will not be hired You will be fired if they find out after you have been hired

READ and FOLLOW Instructions! Read entire application first, B4 you start completing it Write neatly, black or blue ink only! Don’t fold, bend, crinkle, or anything else to the application

Education and Experience Tailor it to the job for which you are applying Give details of skills and experiences that make you stand out Goal: to look the most qualified for the position

NO Blanks NEVER leave any blanks Write “Not applicable” or “n/a” if a question does not apply to you NEVER write “see resume”

Negative Information Do not offer negative information unless they ask for it! If you were fired or downsized, you could put “job ended” then explain in the interview. Remember your goal: To get an interview!

Salary Do not include a preferred or starting salary This question is used as a screening method Use “open” or “negotiable”

References Always provide references Always ask your references first Professional references are best, but it is okay to use a mix of professional and character

Connection to Resume Be consistent ◦ Dates ◦ Titles ◦ Names ◦ Etc

Proofread Proofread
