From Moses and Joshua – to - Samuel and Saul Judge Not?

Ruth Ruth is named after a Moabite woman who was joined to the Israelite people by marriage. It tells of the devotion of a foreign girl to her Jewish mother-in-law and her conversion to the Jewish faith. It was written after the exile 4 th to 5 th BC, though this is debated because of the mention of the time of the Judges. Moab is a neighbor country to Israel.

Significant passages: –Ch 1:1-14 Setting the scene –Ch 1:16-17 Character of Ruth –Ch 3: 9-14 A prior claim –Ch 4: 3-6, 9-10 Boaz is the winner –Ch 2:1 A kinsman enters –Ch 4:13-17 Marriage –Ruth’s son is father of Jesse, the father of David and in the line of the ancestry of Jesus.

1 Samuel The two books of Samuel deal with the political transition of Israel from the period of the Judges to a monarchy. Ch 3: –Samuel, a Judge, is recognized in all of Israel as a prophet

Ch 7 –Samuel rouses the people to a victory over the Philistines and recapture the Arc of the Covenant Ch 8: 4-9, –The people request a king which Samuel presides over Ch 13:13-14 –Saul does not measure up to God’s will.

Ch 17 David fights and kills Goliath. The Philistines retreat.

Ch 24 –He opposes Saul, who is jealous and envious of David, but David refuses to kill Saul.
