Thesis Statements ENG 102 Literature-Based Research Paper

Prompt: Choose an archetype from Joseph Hall’s 1608 Characters of Vertues and Vices and trace its development from the 17th century in Shakespeare’s Hamlet through literature and media of the modern era. Qualify your archetype both in Shakespeare’s play and contemporary sources and discuss both how the archetype has been adapted to fit current trends and what this implies about society’s need for change.

Topic? Comment?

The idea of true friendship is represented in Shakespeare's play from the 17 th century and has adapted to fit into the new and current trends in today’s writing.

The “honest man” archetype has been used for decades, and will continue to be used in the future as it evolves with society.

The True Friend from Joesph Hall’s Characters of Vertues and Vices has evolved through the centuries, but still keeps its pure form.

The ambitious character has not only adapted to fit the ever-changing trends but the modern era but established the desire for variation in today’s society.

The true friend has been a staple of literature throughout history, and has stuck with the same qualities, despite the drastic changes in writing from then until now.

Throughout the history of literature writers have all used the same basic envious man with modern changes.

The adaptation of the envious archetype portrayed by seventeenth century literature through today’s contemporary literature implies society’s exceptional need for change.

The archetype of The Good Friend is prevalent over the years in all type of literature including books, poems, movies, and plays.

Although society’s definition of ambition has changed, the ambitious archetype remain virtually untouched since the early 17 th century.

Despite all the time that has passed, the true friend still holds the same qualities in modern literature and society that were deemed important in the early 1600s.

The profane archetype has been a constant in literature through the ages but has also evolved as society changed.

The character of the penitent man has changed through time in order to reflect societies shame over specific events which appeal to the current ethical values of the majority.

The archetype of the Valiant man has been present in literature throughout the corse of history and can still be found in today’s popular movies, books, tv shows, and comics.

Many modern books, plays, and movies still revolve around Joseph Hall’s Characters of Virtues and Vices which defines archetypes and characteristics of people and characters, including the Valiant Man.
