University of Leeds Academic Services Background – White Rose Institutional Repository l Collaboration between Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York l Member of the SHERPA Project. l

University of Leeds Academic Services About the White Rose Consortium l Strategic partnership between the research universities in the Yorkshire region. l Projects include White Rose Grid (e- science), joint degree courses, Faraday Packaging Partnership etc.

University of Leeds Academic Services Why develop a cross-institutional repository? l Strong brand for researchers in the consortium. l Strong brand of White Rose in the region. l Strong existing partnership between the libraries. l Hope that the repository will improve research collaboration in the region. l Testing a model which could be applicable to other regional consortia.

University of Leeds Academic Services Project organisation l Project managers at each site – meet on a regular basis. l Repository hosted at Leeds. l Monthly reports produced by Leeds. l Technical support provided by Leeds.

University of Leeds Academic Services Some key features: configuration l Browse by academic unit – separate subject trees for each institution. l Search across all papers. l Separate user types for each institution – set at registration.

University of Leeds Academic Services Advocacy issues l Appointed project officer to work across three sites. l Project officer will work closely with liaison librarians and senior managers at each site. l Will also draw on White Rose Consortium contacts. l Will use a formalised project management methodology. l Intending to offer a mediated service for deposit of papers.

University of Leeds Academic Services Advocacy Plan l Top-down and bottom-up –Senior committees, Heads of Faculty etc. –Individuals and research groups. l Identify key compliant publishers, make direct approach for permissions. l Harvest content from departmental websites etc. l Launch events and training activities at each site.

University of Leeds Academic Services Policy issues l QC guidelines on metadata. l Likely collection agreements on a department by department basis.

University of Leeds Academic Services The future l Hope to prove that cross-institutional model is successful. l Intend to remain within cross- institutional model. l Long-term funding issues to be agreed.
