LANGUAGE STUDY MONDAYS: Grammar Edition

PARTS OF SPEECH:  What are “parts of speech”?  We categorize English words into 8 basic types or classes called "parts of speech," as each type of word serves a different function in our sentences.

LIST THE 8 PARTS OF SPEECH:

NOUNS:  Define “noun”: a person, place, thing or idea  Identify the nouns in the following sentence: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.

COMMON NOUNS:  Define “common noun”: names general items (ex: book, girl, taco)  Circle the common nouns in the sentence: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.

PROPER NOUNS:  Define “proper noun”: names specific things; require capitalization.  Underline the proper nouns in the sentence: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.

JOT DOWN YOUR OWN EXAMPLES:

CONCRETE NOUNS  Can be identified by one of the 5 senses  Nouns that can be seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted  Identify the concrete nouns in the sentence: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.

ABSTRACT NOUNS  Names an idea, concept, quality, or state of mind  Cannot be seen, heard, smelled, felt, or tasted.  Examples:

COMPOUND NOUNS:  Noun made up of two words (one of which is always a noun)  When writing compound nouns, DO NOT leave a space between the two original words.  Example:

COLLECTIVE NOUNS  Refers to a group of people/places/things  Examples:

PRONOUNS:  Define “pronoun”: noun that takes the place of a common or proper noun  ONLY used when the common/proper noun it is taking the place of has been clearly established

PRONOUN PRACTICE:  Rewrite the first sentence replacing all common and proper nouns with pronouns: Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.
