Family Tree Maker 2006 Unlocking Its Mysteries

Getting Started

The Toolbar  Back & Forward  Print  Family view  Pedigree view  Web search  Tree charts  Reports  Index of individuals  Bookmark  History  Help

Main Views  Family View – used to enter, edit and view information about one nuclear family.  Pedigree View – displays several generations of your family tree at a glance.  Web Search Results View – displays the records found on Ancestry.com that match your Web Search criteria.

Family View Enter Your Family’s Data  Names  Birth dates & places  Marriage date & place  Children’s names, birth dates & places

Family View Adding Information  In the Family View select the “Add Parents” button.  Enter your father’s name and related information in the Husband fields, then enter your mother’s maiden name and related information in the Wife fields.  Enter information about their wedding.  Enter information about your siblings.  Repeat for your grandparents.

Adding More Data  To add more facts click on the “Edit” icon.  The “General” tab lets you add a title or AKA to the individual.  The “Add Fact” button lets you enter additional information.  Click on the Down icon and select from the list of facts.  Then enter the date and description of the added fact.

Editing Data  To fix errors click on the “Edit” icon.  The “General” tab lets you change basic information about the individual.  The “Facts” tab lets you correct other details. Highlight the error and click on the “Edit Fact” button.  Change the incorrect information and click OK twice.

Documenting Sources  Click on the “Source Citation” icon  Click the down arrow to the right of the “Master Source” field. Select an entry or “New Master Source”.  Enter the appropriate information.  To add an image, click on “Images”.

Scrapbook  Click on the “Scrapbook” icon.  Click on “Picture/Object” on the menu bar.  From the drop-down menu select “Insert Picture from File”.  Use the “Look in” fields to select the image.  To add a caption click on the icon below the picture. Enter the caption and click OK.

Pedigree View  Displays an individual’s direct ancestors.  Information/Navigation Tabs –Spouses and Children –Parents and Siblings –Index  Change Display options

Index  Lists all individuals in family tree.  To find an individual: –Use elevator bar –Enter person’s name (last, first)  Options –Sort sequence –Married/Maiden name

Bookmarks  Used in Family View or Pedigree View to navigate quickly.  To add a bookmark: –Click on Bookmark icon –Select “Add Bookmark”  To use a bookmark: –Click on Bookmark icon –Select desired person

History  Used to navigate to recently edited individuals.  Click on History icon  Individuals are listed in reverse chronological order (most recent first)

Web Search  The Web Search function allows you to search all the data bases in Ancestry.com  BUT – you need a current subscription  Web search icon appears on: –Toolbar –Family View –Pedigree View –Pedigree View side panel

Web Search Results  Web results screen –Top window displays results found in decreasing order of quality –Bottom left window shows details of the highlighted record –Bottom right window shows details of your ancestor  Quality ranking system – star rating  Increase to get fewer results, decrease to get more results.
