Layton Elementary School Davis School District How We Make Our School Safe

At Layton Elementary, EVERY STUDENT has the right to feel safe at school.

How We Run Our Safe School: We treat students with respect so that they will know how to treat others Feel free to do anything that doesnt cause a problem for anyone else If you cause a problem, you will be asked to solve it If you cant solve the problem youve caused, or choose not to, we will do something What we do will depend on the special person and the special situation

No Real or Pretend Weapons Pretend is Real…

What is a weapon? Pretend is Real… Any item that can hurt or scare another person

No Drugs, Alcohol, or Tobacco Pretend is Real…

Having, sharing, showing, using, selling, or being part of any of this with REAL, LOOK-ALIKE, or PRETEND drugs, illegal or not, including tobacco and alcohol can spell B-I-G T-R-O-U-B-L-E for you! Pretend is Real…

Bullying

Sometimes… Kids are bullies Kids are bullied Kids see bullying

What Is Bullying? Play Fighting Real Fighting Punching Pushing or Shoving Kicking Other? Physical

What Is Bullying? Spreading Rumors Threatening Teasing / Name Calling Gestures Sending a friend to do your bullying Being mean Other? Verbal / Non-Verbal

What is Telling? What is Tattling?

If someone is going to get in trouble it's tattling, if someone is going to get hurt it's telling. If you're not sure, tell an adult and they will decide.

Sexual Harassment is any unwelcomed behavior of a sexual nature that makes the other person feel uncomfortable. Some examples of sexual harassment are: Physical Contact Jokes Teasing Staring Inappropriate or obscene pictures, music, or gestures Comments Rumors Notes Rating Lists Swearing Name calling, including gay, fag, lesbian, etc.

Bullying / Harassment Even if you are just joking around! Pretend is Real The bully doesnt get to decide whether or not someone is a victim. The person being bullied gets to decide.

What do you do if you or someone you know is being bullied? Tell the bully to STOP. He/She might not be aware they are being a bully. If it continues or you still feel uncomfortable, tell an adult or call or text the Bullying Hotline. Bullying is NEVER ok.

Discrimination and Prejudice

Discriminate Treating someone unfairly or better than others for an unfair reason Prejudice (to pre-judge) Having an opinion or some ideas about someone without really knowing that person

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people are from different ethnic or racial groups

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people are from different religious groups

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people have disabilities

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people look different from us

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people learn quickly, or slowly, or differently from us

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people are richer or poorer than us

What are some ways we are prejudiced or discriminate? When people have an accent or speak a different language than we do

Is one better than the other? No, just different! And different is OK!

Electronic Devices Electronic devices include any device that is used for audio, video, or text communication, cell phones, smart phones, pagers, cameras, CD players, pocket PCs, DVD or video players, MP3 players, iPods, PSPs, etc.

At Layton Elementary: Students may have and use electronic devices. They may not use them during the school day. This includes recess, lunchtime, and while in the halls. They must be completely powered down, turned off, and kept out of sight. Electronic devices may be used before the first bell and after the final bell as long as they do not create a distraction or disruption. Electronic devices may not be used in a way that contributes to bullying or other unacceptable behaviors.

At Layton Elementary: Students who violate this rule may have the electronic device taken away by a school employee. If a students device is taken away, it will be returned only to the students parent or guardian. If a students device is taken away repeatedly, he/she may not be allowed to bring it on school grounds permanently.

The following consequences may happen when a student breaks the rules weve talked about today: Parents notified Prohibited from participating in some school activities In- or out-of-school suspension Expelled from school Moved to another school Referred to police Other interventions as deemed appropriate

Do these rules apply only at school? No! Respectful behavior is important wherever you are! And, Safe Schools Rules apply from the time you leave home until you return from school!
