How to prepare your resume  The roles of the resume  The basics of resume writing  How to prepare your resume Contact Information Job History Accomplishment Bullets  Education

The basics of resume writing (I)  One Page: Period! No matter who you are the rest will not get read white space didn’t get anybody hired!  Don’t pay anyone to help you if you can type and follow instructions, you can prepare your own resume  Don’t include your references (have them ready, but don’t include them) they are an antiquated inclusion USA has a meritocratic economy

The basics of resume writing (II)  Don’t include hobbies, activities, or extracurriculars you are wasting “real estate” you’re not hired for your hobbies  No separate listing of technical skills Include them and proficiency in the body in context with a particular job or accomplishment  No Objective statements Limits Your Flexibility  I’m sorry the job I have in mind is not really challenging  No Personal Summaries Let the interviewer be the judge

The basics of resume writing (III) 10 Point Type 11 or 12 if you are early in your career and have less data Common Serif Fonts Are A Good Choice  Times New Roman  Bookman  Minimal margins Just what your printer can handle .5” on the left and right and.75” on the top and bottom Readability of the font is paramount (this font is Verdana)

The basics of resume writing (IV)  8 1/2" x 11"  Inkjet printing OK  Don’t go overboard with the paper About $10 for a 500/Ream is OK a little better paper than copy paper Heavyweight Printing Paper 28 lb. 96 US / 109+ Euro Bright

The basics of resume writing (V)  Contact Information centered your name should be bold (12 pt. OK) name, address, phone and non-work  Your phone should have an answering machine or service: “Hi, this is Joe, I'm not available, please leave a message.”  Check your every day Gmail now supports POP

The basics of resume writing (VI)  The majority is dedicated to your job history multiple text blocks, each dedicated to a specific job these blocks should be separated by a return/empty line if you have had eight jobs, you get eight blocks

 Each job block has three parts: 1.Dates, title and company Bold and underlined for easy identification Dates include months and years, followed by a colon This part ends with a dash 2.Core responsibilities 2-4 sentences ideally would come from your job descriptions, but you may need to create them yourself always start with an action verb! Can’t fit your responsibilities in 4 sentences? Maybe you need to revisit your priorities in your job The basics of resume writing (VII) This is the ONLY time when you use a timeline to present your career. During the interview you use a different structure.

The basics of resume writing (VIII)  Each job block has three parts: 3.Accomplishments bulleted list – at least one per responsibility Each accomplishment starts with an action verb: achieved, ranked (2 nd, fifth), reduced, increased, noted for, recognized… Exception: First. Example: First man on the Moon Bullets flush to the left, try to fit in one line
