Creating a Resume Objective: Use Microsoft Word to create both a formal and informal Resume.

Why write a Resume?  A Resume is the potential employer’s first look at who you are and what you can do?  Many employers get several resumes for one job, so they don’t waste time with people who do not impress them with their resume.  Your goal is to submit a Resume worthy of a second look.

Basics  Always type your Resume.  Use common Fonts like Arial or Times Roman.  Your Name at the top should be larger font. 14-18  The text on the rest of the page should be 11-12 font.  Use Black ink  One inch margins  Print on white paper, higher quality paper would look nice.

Contact Information Full Name Complete Address including State and zip Phone Number with area code Email Address

Electronic Submission  Many companies require that you submit your resume through email or online.  It is important to create a good file name that is easily identified with your name.  Ex: andrew_brock_resume.doc  NOT: drew2013res.doc

Objective and Education  Start with a career objective statement.  Ex: To use my knowledge, skills and education to obtain a job in the field of __________.  Your Education section may not be very lengthy during high school, but you want to list your High school and any colleges or universities you attend in the future.  List High School and graduating class.  Ex: A.P. Brewer High School Class of 2014

Leadership Activities  Include any Leadership Roles or Activities you have been involved with. Ex: FFA President 2013 Ex: JV Basketball Team 2012-2013 Ex: Worship Team at First Baptist Church Not: Rock and Roll Club Join a club that can help you!

Work Experience  List any jobs that you have had previously. Ex: Sales Associate at Tractor Supply Company Ex: Carpenter at Brock Cabinet Company Inc.  You may not have any previous jobs. If that is the case list experiences that build job skills. Ex:Babysitting for the Smith Family Ex: Volunteering at the Food Shelf Ex: VBS Teacher at First Baptist Church Ex: Lawn Care for the Jones Family

Accomplishments  Under the Work Experience line a section for accomplishments may be included.  You could change this section to “Related Skills,” “Other Information,” or “Other Interests and Activities.”  This gives you a chance to showcase your achievements. Ex: Honor Graduate Class of 2015 Ex: Public Speaking County Champion  Or your skills. Ex: Works well with a team

References  A separate page for References is a good idea.  If an employer wants References they will request them. Ex: Andrew Brock Agriscience Teacher awbrock@morgank12.org 256-778-8634

Resume Wrap-up  Have someone proof read your resume before you send them out.  Sometimes when you stare at a computer screen for a while you won’t catch the problem.  Check for spelling and punctuation.  Don’t forget to update your resume periodically to reflect new Jobs. Skills and Accomplishments.
