How to Write a Resume 1.Try to keep the resume within 1 page. 2.The major headings in order are: KEY QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION PREVIOUS WORK/CONSULTANCY EXPERIENCE LANGUAGES TECHNICAL SKILLS

1.The KEY QUALIFICATIONS statement should, in a paragraph or two, let the reader know why he/she would want to hire you. It should include areas of expertise and where your primary experience lies. SELL YOURSELF. Use action words (i.e. Performed training in., Implemented new financial controls..., Designed workshops..., Managed key staff..., Wrote new manual on..., Monitored..., Developed new methodologies..., Accomplished..., etc.).

1.When listing EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, begin with highest degree/award. Only list those trainings which were at least 40 hours in length, unless they are unusual or significant. Master of International Business Studies (MIBS) Human Resources University of South Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina Bachelor of Administration, Finance University of Georgia; Athens, Georgia Certificate in International Humanitarian Law Judge Advocate General's Office; Ottawa, Canada

1.Under TECHNICAL SKILLS, list any skills not found above. For example, if you are an Information Technology professional, you would list things like "Quality Assurance" or "Systems Design," as well as any specific skill sets you have, such as "Visual Basic" or "SQL Server."

Personal Data The only personal information that you should include on your resume is your name, address and telephone number, which should appear at the top of your resume. You may, if you wish, also include your e-mail address. Try to use the St. John’s e- mail address. If you must use a personal e- mail, make sure the address is professional (e.g. elvis-was-here-24@xyz.com. may not be viewed as professional by an employer).

Incidentally, make sure you have a functional answering machine with a professional message. Do not include date of birth, marital status, height, weight, health condition, or spouse’s name or occupation. Do not attach a photograph or include a personal website.

A single page!! If you find yourself thinking: There’s no way I can limit my resume to a single page! My life has been too phenomenally interesting and action-packed to fit on a single page!! Two words: Prioritize and Edit. Many people make the mistake of thinking that a resume should contain everything of interest they have ever done in their lives: it shouldn’t. If it’s an employment resume, for example, its purpose is to get you an interview, not a job. If, after editing your resume, you still feel that there is no way to limit it to a single page, seek professional help; you are an egotistical boob! No one’s life is that interesting.

What information might be in your resume? Objective Qualifications and/or Skills Education Employment Volunteer Experience Languages Extracurricular Activities Affiliations Awards Hobbies and Interests References Anything else of interest/pertinence to your objective
