Sixth Grade Advanced Math Parent Information Meeting April 23, 2009

Background Test Scores: 5 th Grade CRCT Score of 860 – 950 (92% - 100%) 5 th Grade ITBS Test of 94 th percentile or better in Total Math Score 5 th Grade ITBS Test of 80 th percentile or better in Total Reading Score Grade Classroom Performance: Final Grade of 90% or better Completes homework all the time on time Engages in math instruction with minimal or no direction from the teacher Strong skills with number sense Strong understanding of the concepts of ratio and proportion Does not need re-teaching Seeks difficult math content and enjoys math problems that require persistence

Sixth Grade Advanced Math Content Combination of traditional Pre-Algebra and Geometry Students need to be able to compute quickly and accurately. Combination of all 6 th grade content and a few 7 th grade topics

Class Routine New topics everyday Teacher direct instruction Students are expected to independently complete homework

Expectations of Class Students experiencing content between 1 and 2 years ahead of an already rigorous pace. At least 1 new concept and possibly more are learned everyday. Class time is intense with instruction and discussion.

Middle School Math Pathways Sixth grade students taking advanced math are recommended by their teachers for on-level, advanced, or accelerated math as a 7 th grader. Advanced math classes prepare students for the pace of accelerated math classes in high school. Accelerated math classes prepare students for the pace of AP classes in high school.
